Jean-Marc Quarin December - 1990
Jean-Marc Quarin
Ruby red. Slightly vermilion. Brown reflections. Good intensity. Very bright. Precise. Very intense. Complex and refined. Rich nuances of ripe fruits, caramel, wood, spices (clove), cedar. Great elegance. Precise. Intense. Slightly warm, vanilla and fruity note. Licorice note. Appealing and quite compact. Clean attack. Smooth development, distinguished and remarkably balanced on a straight-lined structure and an intense, very fleshy, very supple, rich, energetic and concentrated framework. Evolution towards a finish, with flavors of very ripe fruits, fresh cream, with slightly austere tannins. But what substance! To follow and to keep. A great '78 very much Cabernet-styled.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Ripe garnet. Very, very restrained on the nose, needs time and a good nose, then shows a certain depth, floral tones, also licorice, smoke, develops positively with air, appears rather dark-fruited. On the palate taut, medium body, melted tannins, good acid structure. Coherent in itself, classic, “Old School Bordeaux” and with good length and balance. A positive surprise.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Fully mature, this excellent example of classic Bordeaux is bit on the rustic side. Still, there is more than enough to keep you busy here. The tobacco dusted, red fruit offers additional notes of cigar leaf, forest floor, pepper and green leafy scents. There is a stern side to the tannins, that with air, softens, leaving with a bite of crisp, juicy, Cabernet Sauvignon with just a hint of cranberry in the finish. There is no reason not to be pulling a cork on this wine.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never fully melt away.

Savoury, yet still fresh and tannic, with notes of cigar box. Classically proportioned the tannins simply faded away leaving a sweet cedary finish. While the fruit was subdued there was still complexity, balance and a great deal of style.

Mature rim. Dry sandalwood nose. Good concentration but lacks finesse. Cumbersome. Dry leaf notes. Too tannic/lacks fruit concentration. Falls apart - heavy woody finish. Lacklustre.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the most emblematic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, recognized for the precision, depth and longevity of its wines. Classified as Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has distinguished itself for over a century through a level of excellence and quality consistency that places it at the top of the Médoc hierarchy.

Originating from the former Léoville estate, the Château Léoville Las Cases vineyard is today protected by a historic enclosure, a rare singularity in Bordeaux, guaranteeing a strong parcel identity. Located immediately bordering the Gironde, facing the great terroirs of Pauillac, the estate benefits from a privileged environment, conducive to slow and homogeneous ripening of the grapes.

The blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, gives the wines a deep structure and remarkable aging potential. Among the iconic vintages are Château Léoville Las Cases 1945, Château Léoville Las Cases 1982, Château Léoville Las Cases 1990, Château Léoville Las Cases 1986, Château Léoville Las Cases 2000, Château Léoville Las Cases 2005, Château Léoville Las Cases 2014., regularly praised for their balance and evolution potential. The estate also produces a renowned second wine, Clos du Marquis, offering a more accessible interpretation of the Las Cases style.
