Wow. Really youthful on the nose, with currant, blackberry and hints of vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of mint and fruit. Goes on for a long time. Surprisingly youthful. Give it a couple of years. So focused and beautiful.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1988 Léoville Las Cases is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. Pale to medium garnet-brick in color, it wafts slowly, gracefully out of the glass with perfumed notions of dried cherries, rose oil, sandalwood and cigar box over a core of preserved plums, figs and fruitcake with a touch of dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate has a soft, satiny texture and tons of freshness supporting the fragrant earth and floral notes, leading to a long mineral and exotic spices-laced finish. This is so good to drink right now, but no rush. It has the structure and stuffing to exist at this plateau for at least good 10-15 years further, before it slowly begins to fade..

Dark ruby with slight pink rim. Opulent rich balckcurrant/cassis nose. A lot of class and finesse on the palate. Very supple. Great depth/complexity. Still some toasty oak on finish. Very fine 1988 comparable to First Growths. Wonderful wine. Tasted 2-3 times in Bordeaux.

Great to see how Las Cases has survived from one of the good-but-not-great vintages of the 1980s. This was opened just before tasting, and needs time to uncurl. Opens up to show earthy, brambled notes of blackberry, tomato leaf, undergrowth, raspberry, saffron and crushed mint leaf. So much complexity and layers of flavor, perfectly read to drink.

A beautiful Las Cases vintage that is at its peak. There is freshness and firm tannins despite being 26 years old. Wonderful array of flavours from tobacco and cedar to earth and dried plums. The wine is in fine shape with ability to age for another decade.

Dark color, intense and slightly evolved. Nose of medium intensity and discreet. Tender on the attack, juicy in the mid-palate, flavorful, the wine evolves both aromatic and slightly harsh in the persistence on finely licorice-like nuances.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Matured Bordeaux red. Open, delicately fragrant nose, develops beautifully with air, becoming increasingly complex and profound, showing green pepper, red berry fruit, appears cool. On the palate powerful, with pressure and crisp red fruit, a mouthful of wine, yet not heavy, shows noticeable tannin, good acidity structure, appears lively, energetic, shows edges and corners. Finishes long-lasting, stony, cool. A classic Bordeaux, now at its peak, until 2030

Firm, classic, old-school styled wine with good concentration and a focus on its bright, crisp, herb and cedar accents. Better on the nose, with its peppery leaf, mint, cedar, tobacco and bright currant aromatics than on the crisp, sharp red berry and cranberry palate. The finish delivers a crunchy blast of red fruits.

This is what claret is all about. Utterly correct, bone dry, straight-backed, not opulently fleshy nor fruity (cf Ch Brown 2010) but fresh and racy. Super-appetising. A health drink? Certainly not for sipping without food but this went admirably with the duck provided for us 1950s babes.

Château Leoville Las Cases
Château Leoville Las Cases

Château Léoville Las Cases is a wine estate located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle in the Gironde department. In the Saint-Julien Médoc AOC, it is classified as a second growth in the 1855 classification.

The estate comprises 97 hectares of vineyards. The vineyard adjoins that of Château Latour, separated by the small Juillac stream. At the heart of the estate lies the Grand Clos, a 50-hectare vineyard entirely enclosed by walls, with its entrance guarded by the famous lion adorning the labels of the estate's bottles. The vineyard of Château Léoville Las Cases features a grape variety composition of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels, on average 50 to 100% new.

The second wine is Clos du Marquis. It has been produced since 1902. Anecdote: In a scene from the film 'L'Aile ou la Cuisse' (The Wing or the Thigh), the food critic Charles Duchemin (played by Louis de Funès) manages to identify a Léoville Las Cases 1953 'visually' even though he has lost his sense of taste.
