Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Medium to deep brick in color, the nose of the 1945 Mouton Rothschild is ATOMIC. It explodes from the glass with the most vibrant, spritely black cherry compote, kirsch and raspberry pie notes you can possibly imagine. This is backed up with beautifully fragrant rose oil, dried lavender, fallen leaves and wild mushroom scents, followed by waves of eucalyptus, cigar box, woodsmoke, incense and dark chocolate coming through as it transforms in the glass over the course of 30-45 minutes. The full-bodied palate is rich, decadent and very densely layered, strutting exquisitely ripe, fine-grained, silt-like tannins. The overall character is paradoxical: at once profoundly mature and yet so jaw-droppingly youthful. If this finish does not bring a tear to your eyes, nothing will.

Great sheen and lightening now but great shaded ruby. Chocolate and rich rum toffees on the nose - halfway to a Vin Doux Naturel - almost rancio! Cleans up in the glass. Really sweet and intense and you can really see the relation with 1961 - a great hot concentrated vintage. With amazing depth. Made at the end of the war with Philippe in his prime. Very clean but amazingly rich and intense. Life and zest and lilies and treacle but great energy. So long and rich and peacock's tail. So different from the elegance of the 1953 Lafite and much richer than the Latour 1961.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only wine from the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, after having been initially classified as Second Cru.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then named Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascension: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change".

The singularity of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by renowned contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This quest for excellence is also found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild 1946, Château Mouton Rothschild 1947, Château Mouton Rothschild 1982, Château Mouton Rothschild 1986, Château Mouton Rothschild 1989, Château Mouton Rothschild 1993, Château Mouton Rothschild 1995, Château Mouton Rothschild 1996, Château Mouton Rothschild 2000, Château Mouton Rothschild 2005
