CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1997

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1997 label is an expressive, atypical and colorful design created by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. To honor this vintage, the artist reveals a shimmering and festive allegory of the pleasures of the table and tasting. Looking at the drawing, the snake gets all the attention. A "tempting" serpent who is not interpreted by Niki as evil, but rather offers a bottle of wine...
Château Mouton Rothschild 1997 reveals an intense nose, offering aromas of leather, hyacinth and tobacco. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Verdot. 1997 is a superb vintage at Château Mouton Rothschild.

Very dense, dark and opaque. Lovely sweetness here, with fine, fine quality on the nose of charry, toasty, espresso and a gorgeous sweetness of fruit; cherry, cassis and some exotic spice. The palate is fine too, with good texture and ripe tannins bolstering quite robust, full fruit. Plenty of cedar and smokiness too, and lovely length. Thought the Lafite has the more intriguing nose perhaps, this wine sneaks it overall and seems to be just starting to come together. Excellent. Drink now - 2015.

Spicy cassis, incense, cedar chest, tobacco and smoke aromas, medium body and a light, black raspberry and spice filled finish are found in this wine. This is showing well today. However, it is not a vintage of Mouton Rothschild I’d hold for further aging.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The appearance is similar to Latour ’97 and in fact the nose seems to have more vigour althought the new oak is not so seamlessly melded. Blackberry, a touch of cassis, but the oak sticks out rather. The palate is full-bodied, quite dense with a touch of opulence and showiness about it (well, it is Mouton!) I am not sure about the balance: difficult to discern the fruit intensity under than oak. Leathery finish.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Mouton Rothschild is undoubtedly one of the most famous wine estates in the world. In the Pauillac AOC, it has been a First Growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification since 1973.

Purchased in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, Brane Mouton entered into legend under the name Château Mouton-Rothschild. It was with the advent of Baron Philippe de Rothschild that Mouton truly became the monumental 1st Growth that it is today. Mouton Rothschild 1945 and 1982 are among their finest vintages. Beyond the construction of cellars and buildings, and the accession to First Growth status, it is the passion of a lifetime rediscovered in action by this exceptional man.

Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Château Mouton Rothschild has been a First Growth since 1973. Its motto "First I cannot be, second I do not deign to be, Mouton I am" has thus become "First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change".

The elegance and magic of this wine have thus charmed the greatest contemporary artists who, each year, illustrate Mouton's priceless wines with their art by creating an original work on the label. Château D'Armailhac and Château Clerc Milon follow in the footsteps of this qualitative concern of the Rothschild family.

The great vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are: 1994, 1989, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1982, 1970, 1966, 1962, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1949, 1947, 1945
