CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 1985

The 1985 vintage benefited from the same climatic conditions as the 1982 vintage. Thanks to continuous sunshine from July to September, the skin of the berries was able to thicken and the tannins were condensed and supple. Château Lafite Rothschild 1985 is a complete, velvety and very bouqueted wine. The 1985 vintage is an exceptional one. The 1985 wines are still different from the 1982 wines, with a more pronounced elegance.

Falstaff January - 2010
Falstaff
Dark, vital ruby garnet with violet reflections, delicate brightening at the rim. Somewhat restrained on the nose, subtle notes of dried plums, spices, morello cherries, fine chocolate caramel, underlaid with a hint of graphite and cedar wood. On the palate fine plum compote, balanced and highly elegant, a wine full of charm, has reached perfect drinking maturity, appears fresh and seductive, a timeless Lafite classic that doesn't carry a gram of excess fat.

Light, tart, short, cranberries, and cassis with loads of pyrazine notes, spice, and assorted, greenery. There is a sense of rustic class and soft tannins, which helps the score a bit, but this is not my favorite vintage of Lafite. And no, time is not going to improve this wine. It is already close to 40 years of age. Drink from 2024-2034.

A graceful wine with cedar, berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a succulent, sweet fruit finish. Delicious to drink now.Cabernet Challenge. (JS)

Very impressive and absolutely at its peak. Juicy and mineral with a sweet, rich nose. Neat and well balanced with no excess of tannins. Really lively. Firm, salty and savoury. This is one of those Lafites that dances on the palate. Great balance. Bravo!

Comment Château: 1985 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1er cru classe, Pauillac The year 1985 marks the return set fair. The same weather conditions in 1982, namely a sun continuously from July to September, produced similar results: the thick-skinned grapes, condensed tannins and supple, with vibrant flavors. The grapes have produced wines full, velvety, very bouquets and even a bit more elegant than the 1982. The ideal time of September 1985 was an exceptional vintage, citing the same 1953 Medoc! Delicious from his youth, it should be appreciated rapidly as they age gracefully. Comments from the Castle: The 1985 vintage marks the return of Constant beautiful weather. The same climate conditions as in 1982, continuous sun from July to September produced similar results: thick skinned bunch, supple and condensed tannins, and aromas bursting. The grapes gave us whole, velvety, wines with a big bouquet, even a bit more elegant than the 1982. The ideal weather in September made 1985 an exceptional vintage, evoking even the Medoc in 1953! Delicious even in its youth, it should be quickly appreciated while aging with grace.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st growth classified in 1855, is one of the most renowned Bordeaux châteaux. It shares the top position with the greatest in the official 1855 classification. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the 103-hectare vineyard is divided into three plots: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighboring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The majority of the terroir consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with aeolian sand on a tertiary limestone base. The grape variety composition is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines for the grand vin is 40 years, with the 20 hectares of young vines (less than 10 years old) being used for the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called "La Gravière" even dating back to 1886. Wine maturation is carried out for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, with about 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of Château Lafite Rothschild's second wine comes from the "Carruades plateau", where a group of plots was located, which was purchased by the château in the 19th century and adjoined the château's hillock. The "Carruades de Lafite" was formerly called "Moulin des Carruades", before taking on the name Carruades de Lafite.

The legendary vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 1945, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
