CARRUADES DE LAFITE 2010

A start to the viticultural year similar to that of 2009, but with a slightly later budburst, around mid-April. This month was dry and sunny, particularly favorable for the development of the vine. Then, a wave of freshness at the beginning of June complicated the flowering of the Merlots, causing coulure and millerandage. Fortunately, July was very dry with relatively high temperatures, making it possible to make up for the delay in flowering.
August and September, very dry with good daytime temperatures and cool nights, completed the slow and complete ripening of the grapes.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 2010, reveals a floral nose, followed by notes of ripe fruit, blackcurrant, cedar and spices. Dense, rich with very fine and melted tannins. With a very good length, this wine is balanced and elegant. It is made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot.

Falstaff March - 2013
Falstaff
Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections. On the nose, inviting dark berry fruit, a hint of blueberries and plums, fine noble wood note, multifaceted bouquet. Substantial, fine extract sweetness, highly elegant texture, fine tannins, very good persistence, mineral aftertaste, saline and fresh on the finish, good development potential.

The deep ruby purple 2010 Carruades de Lafite offers aromas of violets, plums, blackberries, with a hint of cedar, supported by nice mid-palate fruit flavours balanced by velvety tannins and a fairly long finish. This Carruades is made in a full-bodied, rich, very tannic style with such density and depth that it seems more like a grand vin than a second wine. The selection was done after the malolactic from about 50 parcels, and the result is a gorgeous wine that stands on its own.

Solid, with bright cassis, fig and blackberry fruit studded with tobacco leaf, anise and violet. The long finish has a tarry thread, but stays polished and refined overall, with a whiff of sandalwood lingering gently.

Beautifully refined, lightly cedary nose with a cherry ripeness to the fruit and solid underpinning black fruit. The plate has a depth and richness immediately, The tannins are dry and full as would be expected, but a nice clarity to the fruit and good length.

A dense and very tannic second wine from Lafite-Rothschild. Ripe fruits from juicy Merlot balance its power and give sweetness. It's a rich, fine wine, with the tannins of the vintage never too prominent. For medium-term aging.

Of particular breed, juicy and fresh, dense, perfectly balanced: however, whether the best Carruades bottled to date is worth its almost 200 euros is another question.

Intense purple robe. Generous and precise nose of red fruits (cherry). Warm and powerful palate, with tight and slightly vegetal tannins. A wine more massive than elegant for the moment.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château acquired international renown, particularly among European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé, permanently establishing its status at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravel, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favoring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Lafite Rothschild 1945, Château Lafite Rothschild 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, Château Lafite Rothschild 1990, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996, Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 or Château Lafite Rothschild 2005 illustrate the estate's stylistic consistency and its ability to express the identity of Pauillac with clarity. Château Lafite Rothschild remains an essential reference for understanding the classical excellence of great Bordeaux wines.
