One of my wines of the year! OK, make that of the past few years! The nose, with its smoke, tobacco, Cuban cigar wrapper, campfire, cassis and blackberry was profound. But the volume of the wine on the palate grabs you where need to be grabbed and it keeps you right there. The finish, with its earthy, smoky essence on top of all that fruit, sticks with you for at least 60 seconds!

Most recently deep, tinged with cherry red; more scented too, earthy, cheese rind, singed tobacco, pebbly, its crisp fruit opening up richly; more astringent than the Chateau Haut Brion, crisper fruit, more aggressive, with excellent tannin and acidity.

Very dark – darker than the 1961 – with the colour still right out to the rim. More concentrated and even sweeter than the 1961, with which it is inevitably compared. Very powerful and dense. Luscious, long and tense. Sweet, very rich, rather medicinal. Wonderful stuff.

 Compared to the 1961 Mission, this is showing more maturity in the glass, but the palate has the 59 vintage’s exoticism, warmth and here, a touch of volatility. Earth, Asian spice, dates and dried orange peel all cloaked in alcohol. The palate is full-bodied, just lacking the tautness of the ’61 with a fat, rich-rich middle that is quite ravishing and decadent. Touches of prune and spice towards the finish that is beginning to show some dryness. Five years ago this would have surpassed the ’61, but on this showing it is just a couple of steps over the hill. Still a fabulous ’59 though!

Strong luster, black core, tobacco-leafy berry note, blueberries, shows a somewhat more individual, iodine note. On the palate powerful, earthy nuances, velour leather, idiosyncratic, very sweet, great length, the tannin is so thick and liqueur-like that it could pass as a bread spread.

Château La Mission Haut-Brion is one of the most emblematic estates of Pessac-Léognan, recognized for the depth, longevity and singularity of its red and white wines. Classified as Cru Classé de Graves, the château shares with its illustrious neighbor Château Haut-Brion an ancient history and an exceptional terroir, while asserting its own stylistic identity, often described as more powerful and more earthy.
