Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
There are some famous wines that never live up to their reputation. That is not the case here. Explosive does not begin to express the nose, with all of its tar, smoke, cigar wrapper, pipe tobacco, dark cherries, and plums. But as good as that is, it is the richness and layers of palate-staining fruits that build, expand and resonate for 60 seconds that own the show! 60-90 minutes in the decanter is more than ample here.

Blockbuster. This is incredibly impressive with aromas of plums, berry, tobacco and cedar. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Still closed, but so opulent and beautiful. Raspberry aftertaste. Lasts for minutes. I underrated this years ago. Clearly 100 points.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Both La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion hit home runs in this vintage, which did not produce as many profound wines as the Bordeaux publicity machine suggested. 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, well-integrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare wines that never goes through a closed, unfriendly stage. It has been a compelling, multidimensional effort from barrel, in its infancy, and as it heads into late adolescence. A remarkable tour de force in winemaking, it is one of the all-time profound La Mission-Haut-Brion.

Medium purple-garnet, ocher-colored reflections, broader lightening at the rim. Initially smoky nuances, a hint of leather and traces of iodine, beneath earthy-tobacco notes and hints of blackberry and blueberry. Juicy and powerful. Sweet tannins, hints of orange and some nougat, freshly structured, some blackcurrant on the finish, a real character wine, chocolatey finish.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
La Mission 1989 takes its time, pulls you in with softly charred peony and iris floral aromatics but doesn’t give everything away immediately. Once it has been coaxed open in the glass, liquid magic pours out, going toe to toe with the iconic 1989 Haut-Brion. Think lashings of liqourice, olive tapenade, pomegranate, crushed roses, tobacco leaf and cigar box, with cumin spice gripping on to the finish, speaking to the heat of the year. Last tasted in 2019 and it feels like it is continuing to climb towards peak drinking, still powerful and luscious.

Mature ruby. Deep nose, a wonderful fragrance, this is Bordeaux in its purest form, a poem, a picture with many colors, perfectly coordinated, one wants to immerse oneself. On the palate soft, accessible, without question great cinema, creamy texture, yet not a gram too much fat, everything is in its place, the tannins have largely melted away, the acidity lends freshness, sweet fruit, concentration and elegance, breed and spice, ends enormously long-lasting. Great class and still with reserves!

Beautifully composed nose, with tightly-wound, muscular structure, and all sorts of exotic spice and incense notes. There is just fantastic fruit sweetness here on the palate, reminiscent of the Haut-Brion 1989, with its rounded, composed, fantastically mouth-filling quality, but the silky texture, smooth tannins and perfect balance give an endless, silk-like finish.

The 89 is better than the 1982, tasted just alongside. The color is of medium intensity, evolved and the nose presents itself as fruity, moderately aromatic, but it gives off an enchanting note of cedar. The entry on the palate is broad and opulent. The wine develops extremely fruity, rich, aromatic, powerful, rich, caressing and nuanced. It is absolutely delicious. Very great powerful and noble finish with a grain of tannin much more coated, fleshy and velvety than 90. It is a delight.

Lively and rich. Dense blackcurrant and savoury. Much livelier than the 1990. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon. Fresh and sinewy.

Château La Mission Haut Brion
Château La Mission Haut Brion

Château la Mission Haut-Brion is a wine estate located in Talence, Gironde. Situated in the Pessac-Léognan AOC, it is classified as a grand cru in the Graves wine classification. The estate was purchased in 1983 by the Dillon family, owners of Haut Brion. It is undoubtedly this propensity to give everything at once that distinguishes the wines of La Mission Haut-Brion and attracts many tasters. It is also the heightened expression of the Graves de Pessac terroir. Throughout its aging process and as it matures, Mission Haut-Brion is always generous, constantly revealing itself fully. The hedonistic side of Mission Haut-Brion and the consistency of these qualities are particularities that make it very appealing. La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion is the estate's second wine.
