Expert's opinions

These were lovely wines from the word go but, in the final analysis, only the best 1976s will stay the pace. A year of excessive heat and drought; thoroughly ripe grapes, well nigh perfect in Sauternes.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
From an impeccably conserved original disgorgement, the 1976 Dom Pérignon is showing brilliantly, offering up aromas of praline, confit citrus, toasted bread, beeswax and subtle hints of mocha. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and vinous, with fine depth at the core, lively acids and a long, sapid finish, complemented by a healthy but ultra-fine mousse. The product of a dry, compressed growing season, the harvest for Dom Pérignon began on September 1.

Jeannie Cho Lee June - 2016

Full bodied, biscuity champagne with fine mousse and delicate flavors. The palate is complex, intense and filled with toasted nutty flavors followed by a long finish. This was tasted next to the 1973 Dom blind, I prefered the 73 by a slim margin.

Wine Spectator
A silky smooth champagne, ripe without being oxidised. It has floral and honey notes as well as hints of tart pear and pie crust. A little lighter than the 78, it's delicious to drink now.

This one seemed a little old, austere and fruitless to me – but this may simply have been the effect of tasting it immediately after Taylor's 1985 vintage port – in which case I apologise.

Dom Perignon

Dom Pérignon is a legendary Champagne House and one of the most renowned in the world. In 1668, a young Benedictine monk, Dom Pierre Pérignon, was appointed procurator at the Abbey of Hautvillers. With the ambition to produce the "best wine in the world", he was deeply inspired and his vision revolutionized viticulture with standards that remain the reference for all champagne wines. The House's commitment is that champagnes can only be produced from a single year's harvest.

Dom Pérignon's productions were highly prized at that time. After Dom Pérignon's death, the price decreased somewhat, but not its popularity. The 1921 vintage is undoubtedly the best vintage. Dom Pérignon champagnes have very long aging potential.
