Jean-Marc Quarin February - 2000
Jean-Marc Quarin
Pale greenish-yellow color. Nose of medium intensity. Discreet. Quite fine notes of sémillon and gingerbread. Touch of alcohol. Nuances of very fine honey and flowers. Lovely. More acacia on swirling. The temperature is 12°. What strikes one is the delicacy of the palate structure, soft, melting and refined, and then the taste is that of Sauternes but without the sweetness. It's the terroir! The whole is fine with a slightly oxidative touch. But the finish is beautiful, long and it's a fine and lively wine for an 85, which is rare.

Very ripe, spicy and dramatic, this pours out Sauternes-like fig, honey, tobacco and spice box aromas and flavors and finishes just off-dry and smooth.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a highly renowned Bordeaux wine estate. The Château primarily produces a great sweet wine as well as a white wine called "Y".

Since 1593, Château d'Yquem has been perfecting and passing down its expertise. This is how it stands alone as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. The other classified Sauternes and Barsac occupy the ranks of Premier Cru Classé and Deuxième Cru Classé. Previously owned by the Lur Saluces family, Château d'Yquem has belonged to the LVMH group since 1997.

In pursuit of excellence, Yquem does not market its wine if the quality is not deemed sufficient. This is how great vintages have marked history, such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001, 2009.

The wines are characterized by their complexity due to a significant amount of residual sugars and aromas brought by Botrytis Cinerea. A relatively high acidity helps to balance the sweetness. Another characteristic for which Château d'Yquem is renowned is its longevity. In good years, a bottle will only present its exceptional qualities after one or two decades in a cellar, and with care, it will maintain them for a century or more, adding complexity.
