Jancis Robinson December - 2001

Mid-crimson with an evolved rim. Very very ripe and sweet and furry – as so often with 1990s, more expressive of the vintage than the property. Almost medicinal and mineral and with very attractive voluptuousness. Very sweet yet lively. Not enormous but beautifully balanced. At the end it is very slightly drying out which suggests it should be drunk sooner rather than later, but it's a lovely drink now.

Super. Dark ruby-red. Intense aromas of violets, licorice, plums and berries. Full-bodied, with a thick, concentrated fruit structure and soft, velvety tannins.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This is certainly looking like a typical 1990 Left Bank. Dark brick core with tawny rim. Just a lovely nose that you could almost describe as half Saint Estephe and half Pomerol – lovely gamey quality, savoury, hot bricks, leather, a touch of ginger. Great definition and developing more mocha scents with time in the glass. The palate is full-bodied, lovely balance with great acidity, a sensuous texture, seeming to have softened since the last time I had this, a couple of years ago. Slightly lower in acidity but maintaining great freshness. Develops a slight menthol character with an hour in the glass. This is a wine you want to relish: unassuming and modest. A point. Drink now-2018.

Château Calon Segur
Château Calon Segur

Château Calon-Ségur is a 94-hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third growth (1855 Official Médoc Wine Classification) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the grand vin is often recognizable by its label. The estate's grape varieties consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines averaging 40 years of age. Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The estate also produces a second wine Marquis de Calon Segur and a cru bourgeois Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003 vintage, 2005, 2009 wines, 2010 and 2014 are excellent.
