First growth of Sauternes classification.
The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 was created at the request of Napoleon III in 1855. It dinstinguishes the red wines classification (all from the Medoc except Haut Brion from Pessac Léognan), and sweet white wines classification. The classification of sweet white wines, all of which are Sauternes and Barsac, is divided into 3 categories: first superior growth (Château d‘Yquem is the only one), first growth and second growth.
There are 11 châteaux that are classified 1st growth sweet white wines of 1855 : Château Climens, Château Coutet, Château Guiraud, Château Clos Haut Peyraguey, Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Château Rayne-Vigneau, Château Suduiraut, Château La Tour Blanche, Château Rieussec, Château Rabaud Promis, Château Sigalas-Rabaud.
