 Offering pure black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, the inky ruby/purple 2005 Petrus is still very young and unyielding, but super-concentrated, powerful, full-bodied and primordial. It is much more backward than the likes of Lafleur, Trotanoy or Hosanna. Nevertheless, it is super-rich, extracted, beautifully balanced and pure. Forget it for another 10-15 years, and drink it over the following half-century. This may well be among the longest-lived wines of 2005.

A sleeping giant. Dark ruby in color, showing aromas of blackberry, cèpe and green olive, with a hint of mineral. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a supercaressing mouthfeel. Turns to coffee, dark chocolate and berry. Chewy yet balanced. Very, very long in the mouth. The finish is absolutely breathtaking. Best after 2013.

Petrus is one of the most emblematic and sought-after wines of the Pomerol appellation, occupying a unique place in the Bordeaux wine landscape. Unlike the grands crus classés of the Médoc, Pomerol has no official classification, yet Pétrus has established itself over time as the absolute reference of the appellation, recognized for the singularity of its terroir and the exceptional consistency of its wines.

The Petrus vineyard rests on a unique plateau of iron-clay soils, dominated by a high proportion of blue clay, which is rare in Bordeaux. This terroir gives the wines a dense structure, remarkable depth, and an immediately recognizable identity. The grape variety used is almost exclusively Merlot, a variety that finds here an expression of rare intensity.

The international renown of Petrus was built during the 20th century, particularly driven by influential figures who shaped its style and reputation. The wines of Pétrus are distinguished by their richness, their silky texture, and their exceptional aging potential. Among the iconic vintages: 1961 wine, 1982 vintage, the legendary 1989, Petrus 1990, 2000, Petrus 2016, 2017 wine, regularly cited among the greatest wines of Bordeaux.
