CHÂTEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD 1988

The Château Mouton Rothschild 1988 label was created by the American painter and sculptor Keith Haring. Like other artists before him, he chose to stage one of the symbols of the Château: the rams. On a mauve colored background, we can see dancing rams.
Château Mouton Rothschild 1988 reveals toasted notes, caramel, blond tobacco, liquorice, as well as aromas of vanilla and flowers such as lily. This Premier Cru Classé is made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Nuanced ruby colour. Dense, spicy, exotic nose with definite ingredient X. Not rich but very pure and very Mouton with its grace notes of warm flint stones. Long and nuanced.  Really appetising and aristocratic.

Here is one of the three winners of this tasting. Dark color, medium intensity and evolved. Intense nose, particularly smoky, reductive and rather surprising in the tasting landscape of this session. Dense on the attack, juicy on the development, particularly fruity, with a slightly austere texture, but full-bodied and fragrant, this wine stretches out on a very good finish.

Though I don't consider this a perfect wine, it has always been classic in quality. It's rich and fruity, with loads of currant, tobacco, smoke and new wood on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and an elegant finish.

Tom Cannavan (01-2002) Lovely quality again, with a slightly more developed briarwood, chestnut and pencil-shaving nose. Not quite so delicious as the 1990, but possibly finer. There are notes of coffee, tobacco and finely-wrought blackcurrant and plum. On the palate very fresh and positive, with sweet berry fruit and a sense of minerality at the core. There's a good framework of toasty oak, balanced acidity and fine, silky tannins. Lovely quality here.

Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of the most iconic wine estates in the world. Located in the Pauillac appellation, it is the only growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux classification to have been elevated to the rank of Premier Cru Classé in 1973, having initially been classified as a Second Growth.

Acquired in 1853 by Nathaniel de Rothschild, the estate then known as Brane-Mouton became Château Mouton Rothschild and entered into legend under the impetus of Baron Philippe de Rothschild. A visionary, he profoundly modernized the vineyard, developed the cellars and imposed absolute quality standards, making Mouton one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. His motto illustrates this unique ascent: "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change" (First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change).

The uniqueness of Mouton Rothschild is also expressed through its artistic labels, illustrated each year by great contemporary artists, reinforcing its cultural and heritage aura. This quest for excellence is also found in the other properties of the Rothschild family, notably Château Clerc Milon and Château d'Armailhac.

Among the most iconic vintages of Château Mouton Rothschild are:

Château Mouton Rothschild 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild 1946, Château Mouton Rothschild 1947, Château Mouton Rothschild 1982, Château Mouton Rothschild 1986, Château Mouton Rothschild 1989, Château Mouton Rothschild 1993, Château Mouton Rothschild 1995, Château Mouton Rothschild 1996, Château Mouton Rothschild 2000, Château Mouton Rothschild 2005
