CHÂTEAU LAFITE ROTHSCHILD 2000

The year 2000 was vegetative and relatively early with an above-average sum of temperatures and normal rainfall. The humidity of late May and early June favored the appearance of mildew, but the vigilance of the vineyard technicians was not faulted. The end of the summer was characterized by good weather conditions, with a hot and dry month of August and September which produced extremely ripe grapes.
Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 has a very dark color with purplish reflections. The aromas of this Premier Cru Classé are sumptuous and captivating. The palate is both powerful and of great finesse, with a remarkable tannic base and length.

Expert's opinions

Well, well, well - Lafite Rothschild does it again. Ever since manager Charles Chevalier was transferred from his beloved Sauternes property of Rieussec (also owned by the Rothschilds) to Lafite in 1994, there has been a succession of profound wines to emerge from this noble estate. The 2000 Lafite Rothschild, a blend of 93.3% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.7% Merlot (only 36% of the crop made the grade) has an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by an extraordinary aromatic expression of liquid minerals/stones interwoven with the tell-tale graphite notes, mulberry, black currants, caramel, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is remarkably light on its feet, but somehow seems to pack intense flavors into layer upon layer of fruit and richness that cascade over the palate. A compelling wine, with extraordinary precision, great intensity, and a seamlessness in spite of what are obviously elevated levels of tannin, this wine was provocatively open and beautiful when tasted in January and February, but I am sure it will soon close down. The finish lasted a whopping 72 seconds! This is utterly fascinating stuff. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2050.

2000 is bottled elegance. The wine has a beautiful sense of refinement, balance, silky tannins and layers of sweet, soft, red fruits that do not want to quit. This is one of the few vintages of Lafite that is better on the palate than it is on the nose. This is an incredible tasting experience that is only getting started. Unless you have a case and you cannot wait to dig in, give it a few more years in the cellar. With time, perhaps a decade or so, this will probably hit triple digits. Drink from 2025-2075.

It is certainly almost black in color, while the new wood flavors are very present. But it shows an impressive restraint, leaving the power of the wine to be revealed over the years rather than immediately.

Falstaff February - 2019

Dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate rim brightening. Black fruits, some plum, fine wood spice, dark chocolate, smoky minerality. On the palate completely embryonic, restrained, fine spice, still appears relatively austere and monolithic, present tannins, the fruit is laid down, nuances of fully ripe Cabernet Sauvignon, notes of cassis and blackberries, extract-sweet, good persistence, certain future potential, has not quite reached its first drinking maturity yet. Patience will be rewarded.

A glorious vintage that is expressive and beautiful after 2 hours of decanting. Lovely notes of violets, sweet spices and herbs with cedar notes. Lifted and giving now but still very young - has many decades of life ahead. Much better bottle tasted at the chateau than the one tasted in Hong Kong a few weeks ago.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild, 1st growth classified in 1855, is one of the most renowned Bordeaux châteaux. It shares the top position with the greatest in the official 1855 classification. Located in the Pauillac appellation, the 103-hectare vineyard is divided into three plots: the slopes surrounding the château, the Carruades plateau to the west, and a 4.5-hectare plot in the neighboring commune of Saint-Estèphe. The majority of the terroir consists of fine, deep gravel mixed with aeolian sand on a tertiary limestone base. The grape variety composition is 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vines for the grand vin is 40 years, with the 20 hectares of young vines (less than 10 years old) being used for the second wine. There are also extremely old plots of over 80 years, one called "La Gravière" even dating back to 1886. Wine maturation is carried out for 18 to 20 months in 100% new oak barrels. Lafite Rothschild produces approximately 15,000 to 20,000 cases per year. The estate also produces a second wine, Carruades de Lafite, with about 25,000 to 30,000 cases. The name of Château Lafite Rothschild's second wine comes from the "Carruades plateau", where a group of plots was located, which was purchased by the château in the 19th century and adjoined the château's hillock. The "Carruades de Lafite" was formerly called "Moulin des Carruades", before taking on the name Carruades de Lafite.

The legendary vintages of Château Lafite Rothschild are 1921, 1945, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1988 and 2000, 2005 in recent years.
