Jancis Robinson July - 2010

A lovely magnum, although I have given a score and drinking dates for how I imagine this wine is tasting in regular bottle size. Attractive ruby with rusty shade to the rim. Lovely ethereal nose. Quite a bit of acid but lovely balance. Long. Menthol fresh. Bone dry. Well mannered. Very Lafite. Long. Super refreshing. Opened out in the glass to be quite rich. A beautifully balanced wine, the like of which we may never see again, as everyone chases ripeness. Skinniness is bad, but when you have great terroir, a wine like this can be sensational.

A buttery, smoky-tasting Lafite that seems to owe its flavor more to wood than grapes, but it's enjoyable.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château acquired international renown, particularly among European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé, permanently establishing its status at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravel, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favoring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Lafite Rothschild 1945, Château Lafite Rothschild 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, Château Lafite Rothschild 1990, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996, Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 or Château Lafite Rothschild 2005 illustrate the estate's stylistic consistency and its ability to express the identity of Pauillac with clarity. Château Lafite Rothschild remains an essential reference for understanding the classical excellence of great Bordeaux wines.
