CARRUADES DE LAFITE 1998

The conditions were optimal in terms of earliness, flowering and temperatures during the summer. Then followed a rainy harvest, which raised fears of the worst. Fortunately, the grapes remained impermeable to this water.
The second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild, the "Carruades de Lafite" 1998, reveals a dark color, the nose is strong, expressive, woody, the powerful attack opens on a fruity, balanced mouth with a beautiful final length.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This has become one of the finest second wines produced. The 1998 (a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 4.5% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot) is an outstanding effort. While very Lafite-like (although more supple and forward), it exhibits a dense rubypurple color in addition to an excellent bouquet of black fruits, smoke, earth, and minerals, supple tannin, an excellent texture, and a long, fine finish.

Currant bush and light earth aromas follow through to a full body, with polished tannins and a balance of currant and fresh herbs. Attractive, but a bit lean.

Dark red color. Good intensity. Bright. Medium intensity nose. Fruity. Cherry note. Mouth entry full of sweetness and quite smooth, developing on a medium and juicy body in the center, which evolves quite quickly, with a slight flavor eclipse towards a medium-length finish, with tannicity where the fruit lacks a little brightness. Medium persistence.

Château Lafite Rothschild
Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the oldest and most prestigious estates in the Pauillac appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages, but it was in the 18th century that the château acquired international renown, particularly among European courts. In the 1855 classification, Château Lafite Rothschild was ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé, permanently establishing its status at the top of the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Owned by the Rothschild family since 1868, the estate rests on a terroir of fine, deep gravel, perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines of Château Lafite Rothschild are distinguished by their finesse, aromatic precision and balance, favoring elegance and length over demonstrative power.

Emblematic vintages such as Château Lafite Rothschild 1945, Château Lafite Rothschild 1982, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, Château Lafite Rothschild 1990, Château Lafite Rothschild 1996, Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 or Château Lafite Rothschild 2005 illustrate the estate's stylistic consistency and its ability to express the identity of Pauillac with clarity. Château Lafite Rothschild remains an essential reference for understanding the classical excellence of great Bordeaux wines.
