Tasting Notes: After the disastrous 1968 year for viticulture, 1969 was marked by September weather conditions that canceled all qualitative hopes. The wine lacked structure and evolved quickly. The nose opens with a fresh menthol note. Subsequently, aromas of prunes and figs indicate a wine marked by definite evolution. The attack is sweet and full. Both richness and acidity are very present and compensate for a certain weakness in the tannic structure. The aromas lean towards pipe tobacco with balsamic notes, but the wine finishes a bit short compared to other vintages from the Château.

Grape Variety/Blend: Cabernet Franc (~50%), Merlot (~45%), Cabernet Sauvignon (~5%) (variations are possible from one vintage to another)

Aging: Aged for 18 to 22 months in oak barrels (100% new)

Maturity: Should be drunk

Food and Wine Pairing: The château's wines pair very well with all types of red meat, game, sauced dishes but also fish dishes provided their recipe includes an element linked to the earth (potatoes, mushrooms, etc.). For cheeses, opt for strong cow's milk cheeses (munster, maroilles, aged mimolette). Finally, for sweets, the choice should be chocolate or coffee-based desserts.

53 Year old Bordeaux. Just insane how well this wine held up. Nose was old but had life it in. Tobacco, cedar block on the nose, light red fruit with some grip to it. Lingering, romantic finish. Every for not a great year this wine was a treat!

Château Cheval Blanc
Château Cheval Blanc

Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most iconic estates of the Saint-Émilion appellation, on the right bank of Bordeaux. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A, it holds a singular place in the history of the Bordeaux vineyard, both for the exceptional consistency of its quality and for the uniqueness of its terroir and grape varieties. Located at the natural border between Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, the estate benefits from a rare mosaic of soils in Bordeaux, combining gravel, clay and sand.

The vineyard of Château Cheval Blanc extends over approximately 39 hectares, divided into numerous distinct parcels, each vinified separately in order to preserve the expression of its terroir. The grape variety, dominated by Cabernet Franc, complemented by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, constitutes an exception in Saint-Émilion and gives the wines a slender structure, natural freshness and remarkable aging potential.

The estate's philosophy is based on extremely precise parcel viticulture, controlled yields and vinifications conducted with rigor and restraint. The aging process accompanies the wine without ever masking the purity of the fruit or the complexity of the terroir. The wines of Château Cheval Blanc are distinguished by their rare balance between intensity, finesse and aromatic depth.

Among the iconic vintages are notably Château Cheval Blanc 1947, Château Cheval Blanc 1949, Château Cheval Blanc 1955, Château Cheval Blanc 1982, Château Cheval Blanc 1990, Château Cheval Blanc 1998, Château Cheval Blanc 1989, Château Cheval Blanc 2000, Château Cheval Blanc 2005, Château Cheval Blanc 2010, regularly praised for their longevity and elegance.
