Tasted blind and perplexed our group and frankly most of us thought this was burgundy, lilt La Tache level and this is the testament to the beauty ( we would have never guessed 1973) of this wine. A magical wine for sure.Well aged, but still full of life, mature fruit but less earthy and more still with a savoury richness in the fruit. Impressive for sure and we can go for a long time here. For us the wine of the night even though we rated others higher than this still it was a magical wine.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Initially slightly musty, becomes increasingly beautiful with air, shows depth, peat, smoke, forest floor and spices. Taut opening, surprisingly juicy and fresh in character, red-fruited, with herbal spice, malt, still shows some tannin, plus a well-integrated acidity. Finishes on licorice. Declined somewhat more rapidly than Ausone, but should maintain its level longer due to its tannin and acid structure.

Château Cheval Blanc 1973 was a huge surprise. The nose is intense like a wine from a great vintage. In the mouth it has a subtlety beyond anything we could imagine from this year. This wine has the nobility of Cheval Blanc, and it was not in its power, though it has plenty - but in its complexity and subtlety. In a blind tasting, no one would ever cite 1973. It has a very beautiful substance, woven and full like a noble wine. And what is amazing is that the wine is quite cloudy and the colour is not very reassuring. More proof of the magic of wine.

Château Cheval Blanc
Château Cheval Blanc

Château Cheval Blanc is a wine estate located in the commune of Saint-Emilion, on the border of the Pomerol appellation. The Château is a Premier Grand Cru Classé A in the official classification of Saint-Emilion classified growths. The vineyard consists of a single 37-hectare plot with several grape varieties: Cabernet Franc (49%), Merlot (47%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (4%). The estate produces the "Grand vin de Cheval Blanc" in red as well as a second wine "Le Petit Cheval" which is made in both red and white.

Cheval Blanc is one of the most consistent estates in the world, with the ability to be excellent at any age. The château's greatest vintages are 1921, 1945, the 1947 vintage, and 1949. There are also great successes in the 1950 vintage, 1953 wines, and the grand crus of 1959 and 1961. Finally, the wines from the 1990, 1998, and 2000 vintages are excellent.
