CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 1996

This year, flowering was very rapid, with an irregular summer, alternating between hot and cool periods. The harvest took place under the sun.
The 1996 vintage will finally give birth to a wine whose classicism and purity will make history. Indeed, Cabernet Sauvignons have very rarely achieved such perfection of style and such balance. Château Margaux 1996 reveals a certain harmony and purity of its fruit, with a density in texture. This is a dream Margaux which is very difficult to resist, but whose aging potential is immense.

Adrian van Velsen - vvWine
Mature Bordeaux red, strong color. On the nose dark-fruited, smoky, bacon, immensely deep and expansive, becomes more floral with air, the senses rejoice, one wants to dive in, so much finesse already in the nose, a hit. On the attack juicy and fresh, concentrated, yet feather-light, here everything is in its place, a powerhouse on the high wire, a magnificent balance and complexity, does Bordeaux get any better? Now until 2040

I adore this vintage in Bordeaux, especially for Margaux. There is great depth, layers and power despite being delicate and floral. The paradox in this wine makes it infinitely fascination. Perfect to enjoy now; should keep at least 25 year easily.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
This could hit triple digits in a few years. It continues filing out, gaining in complexity, richness, and texturally, additional layers of silk and velvet on the palate are the order of the day. This stunning wine is showing beautifully today, and while pricey, it is the best deal for a mature vintage of Chateau Margaux in the market today. Drink from 2023-2055.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
When I used to drink this wine as a student, it generally left me a bit cold, but several recent bottles of the 1996 Château Margaux lead me to think that I must have had bad luck with a poorly stored batch of bottles. Along with Haut-Brion, Margaux is the most forward of the 1996 first growths, offering up an expressive bouquet of creamy cassis fruit mingled with cigar wrapper, sweet spices, espresso roast and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, suave and fleshy, with melting tannins and a long, expansive finish, it's in a beautiful place today.

Intense, dark, purple/black with a hint of light at rim. Beautifully sweet and concentrated, powerful nose with aromas of ripe cherry, blackcurrant and vanilla. It is rich and cedary too with earthy flavours and little notes of incense and violets. The palate is ripe, full and concentrated with bags of cinammon and clove spice, leather, tobacco and fine, ripe but grippy tannins. There are deep seams of fruit in this wine and wonderful balance and complexity finishing long and mellowed by toasty vanillin oak. A great wine and built for development - I know where my £160 would go between this and the previous wine.

Fleshy ruby; beautiful, playful nose, some leather, very compact; on the palate very elegant, somewhat mineral, fine and balanced, firm pressure in the finale.

Grandes Escolhas : Includes around 90% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lots of aromatic class, concentrated, with abundant notes of black fruits and dark chocolate, blueberries, all rich and without straying from the Bordeaux classicism that made it famous. Perfect in the mouth, with a huge future ahead, filigree tannins, with rare and perfect overall elegance.

Cool and racy on the nose, with mineral, currant, black licorice and plum. Full-bodied, with a silky, seductive, exciting palate of ultrafine tannins and a long, long caressing finish. Structured and refined. Fabulous. Gets better and better.

Dark crimson. Very fine, together and fragrant. Sweet and very Margaux – super charming. Already quite evolved for a first growth! Lovely polish. Though you would need to distract from the fine tannins there in abundance on the finish. Very fresh. No shortage of acidity. A little fragile and spiky.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the most prestigious estates of the Margaux appellation and a major historical figure of Bordeaux excellence. Classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé during the official 1855 classification, the château relies on a terroir of fine and deep gravels that favors the expression of a wine of rare elegance and great aromatic complexity.

The Grand Vin of Château Margaux has been recognized since the 17th century as one of the most accomplished expressions of the Bordeaux vineyard. It owes its qualities to the combination of an exceptional terroir, demanding viticulture and vinification work oriented towards precision and balance. Tannic finesse, aromatic depth, freshness and length on the palate constitute the constant markers of the Margaux style.

Iconic vintages such as Château Margaux 1899, Château Margaux 1949, Château Margaux 1953, Château Margaux 1982, Château Margaux 1990, Château Margaux 1990, Château Margaux 2000 or the iconic Château Margaux 2015 illustrate the estate's capacity to produce wines of great complexity, capable of evolving harmoniously over several decades, while maintaining a remarkable readability of their terroir.
