CHÂTEAU MARGAUX 1974

As the month of September was rainy and cold, the grapes could not reach a good level of maturity, despite a decent summer. 1973 is another difficult vintage after 1972 and 1973, both for the quality of the wines and for the conditions of their marketing.
Château Margaux 1974 is pleasant and still quite tannic with a fairly dry finish.

Jean-Marc Quarin June - 2017

Evolved color, of medium intensity, with orange reflections. Discreet and very, very fruity nose as a dry white wine can be. Juicy on the attack, very, very fruity on the development, ample and flavorsome, with a taste of white fruits, this wine evolves long giving a strong impression of youth.

Dark ruby, good hue and light fading tinge. Still tight on the nose, and it's still shy after an hour. Showing hints of floral, earth and dried figs.Still holding on palate with black fruits, dried fruits and violet. It has good acidity backbone that hold the wine together but lack on the finish and mid-palate. Still drinkable but it does not meet my expectation for a first growth. But I must acknowledge that this is a very difficult vintage and probably most other '74 Bordeaux would not be drinkable by now.

Château Margaux
Château Margaux

Château Margaux is one of the greatest wine estates in Bordeaux. In AOC, Margaux is listed among the First Growth wines in the official 1855 Médoc classification.

If it is a privilege to bear the name of its Margaux appellation, there is no doubt that Château Margaux does great honor to it.

For several centuries, this Premier Cru Classé has expressed to the highest degree the exceptional qualities of terroirs patiently gathered by several generations of owners. Maintained and harvested exclusively by hand with extreme care, the 78 hectares of vines (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) draw their richness very deeply from a particularly dense and thick clay-gravel soil.

Fermentation in oak vats, after which the wine is strictly selected, is followed by 18 to 24 months of aging in new oak barrels. A masterpiece among Bordeaux wines, considered by some to be the best, Château Margaux reveals finesse and opulence, depth and complexity in tasting, and develops a bouquet of rare elegance with notes of rose, violet, and black fruits, underpinned by tight tannins that require patient aging before reaching their full potential. The château also produces a second wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, and a dry white wine, Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux (100% Sauvignon Blanc).

The greatest vintages of Château Margaux are: 1900, 1928, 1953, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1990
