To be enjoyed between 2000 and 2050
In Sauternes, the 1988 vintage is qualitative and classic. Château d'Yquem is remarkable, this Premier Cru Classé Supérieur is unctuous, fairly balanced with a strong fragrance of fruit marmalade and burnt honey. It can be drunk over the next two decades.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Just a fabulous wine from the moment the wine hit the glass. The explosive nose, with its coconut, butterscotch, creme brulee, candied orange, flowers, vanilla bean, and honeyed tropical fruit got you to stop, stare and take another sniff. Rich, lush, opulent, intensely concentrated, velvet-textured apricots, yellow tropical fruits and a gallon of honey that was perfectly braced with a wall of acidity that hung on for well over 60 seconds in the finish. This has entered the start of secondary development and could easily go 100 years. As a guess, the next marker comes in with another 20 yeas of age.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1988 Chateau d'Yquem has long been an insider's favorite over the 1989 and 1990, although at the end of the day, all three form a brilliant triumvirate at the end of the decade. Tasted from a half bottle, it shone with a slightly burnished amber hue. The bouquet is just as I have encountered with previous bottles with scents of marmalade, mandarin, burnt honey and citrus fruit, perhaps a little waxier and resinous than I recall. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive weight, viscous as you would expect, though not as flamboyant as the 1989 or as unctuous as the 1990. It is beautifully balanced with notes of apricot, white chocolate and orange peel towards the harmonious and tensile finish. You can see this cruising along for two or three decades and maybe it will turn more Barsac-like in style? Time will tell - a glorious Yquem however you look at it. Tasted May 2016.

Yellow. Green reflections. Bright. Clean. Medium intensity. Discreet. Floral. Fresh fruit. Almond. Mint. Fennel. Fresh and refined. Nutmeg. Subtle and gentle attack, developing caressingly on a highly aromatic structure, evoking essences of fruits and flowers and especially passerillage. The evolution is melting, but not as sophisticated as the 89. Very long, complex and fresh persistence. Very, very beautiful evolution. Great wine. Very beautiful unity in the construction.

The 1988 is a backward-styled Yquem, built along the lines of the extraordinary 1975. With a honeyed, smoky, orangecoconutpineapple-scented nose, this powerful wine possesses full body, layers of highly concentrated, extracted flavors, considerable botrytis, and a sensational finish.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference among great sweet wines and holds a unique place in the viticultural history of Bordeaux. Located at the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir and microclimate that promote the development of botrytis cinerea. In the official 1855 classification, Château d'Yquem was awarded an unparalleled status by being designated Premier Cru Supérieur, a distinction unique among the classified grand crus.

The identity of Château d'Yquem rests on an extreme level of rigor at every stage of production: very low yields, successive harvest passes (tries), and strict selection of grapes. Long held by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical standards of the château.

In the greatest years, Château d'Yquem produces vintages that have become iconic, such as the 1908 wine through the 1921 vintage, considered its pinnacle, passing through 1928 and 1929, which close out a remarkable decade, then the 1937 wine and the 1963 vintage, illustrating an exceptional aging capacity that can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
