In Sauternes and at Château d'Yquem, the harvest has been cancelled. The result is very fine wines, very concentrated and where the fruit is very present in the mouth. According to wine expert Robert Parker, Yquem has produced its greatest wine since the 1975 and 1976 vintages. Its maturity is expected until 2035. A great tasting promises to be enjoyed by Sauternes lovers.

Expert's opinions

When expectations are low, it's always a nice surprise when a wine performs much better than expected. This old vintage of Yquem offered an attention grabbing perfume filled with ripe apricots, pineapple, honey, vanilla, nectarines, toffee coated nuts and spiced peaches. Ripe, sweet and concentrated with delicious, honey coated tropical fruit in the rich finish, this is probably one of the best deals for a mature bottle of Chateau d'Yquem in the marketplace today. This was my last bottle. A perfect ending to a great case of Sauternes wine.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This year is a perfect example of a vintage that was much better for the sweet wines of Barsac and Sauternes than it was for the red wines. Yquem produced its greatest wine since the twin titans of 1975 and 1976. Medium golden, with a big, opulent, honeyed, oaky, flowery, tropical fruit bouquet, this wine is rich and concentrated, has very good acidity, a lot of botrytis, and a stunning finish. It is a great success, and it continues to evolve at a snail's pace.

Coppery color. Fruity and toasted nose. While the attack is pleasant, the wine becomes simpler in its development while remaining flavorful. Medium length.

A good year for Sauternes, a very good vintage for Yquem. Fresh, with lemon, grapefruit and quince notes, this is lovely and sympathique, with honey tones but not much botrytis concentration.

The 1980 d'Yquem is medium gold-amber in color. Delicate, mature notes of unsmoked cigars and tea leaves lead to a waft of toffee and wild mushrooms. The medium-bodied palate is savory, with lemongrass notes and nice freshness, finishing peppery. The residual sugar is 94 g/l.  When to drink:  2024  to  2034

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a highly renowned Bordeaux wine estate. The Château primarily produces a great sweet wine as well as a white wine called "Y".

Since 1593, Château d'Yquem has been perfecting and passing down its expertise. This is how it stands alone as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. The other classified Sauternes and Barsac occupy the ranks of Premier Cru Classé and Deuxième Cru Classé. Previously owned by the Lur Saluces family, Château d'Yquem has belonged to the LVMH group since 1997.

In pursuit of excellence, Yquem does not market its wine if the quality is not deemed sufficient. This is how great vintages have marked history, such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001, 2009.

The wines are characterized by their complexity due to a significant amount of residual sugars and aromas brought by Botrytis Cinerea. A relatively high acidity helps to balance the sweetness. Another characteristic for which Château d'Yquem is renowned is its longevity. In good years, a bottle will only present its exceptional qualities after one or two decades in a cellar, and with care, it will maintain them for a century or more, adding complexity.
