In Sauternes, the 1962 vintage is equally generous in quantity and quality. Even considered a very fine vintage at Château d'Yquem. The result is a very great 1962 vintage at Yquem, with a classified growth with a creamy texture. Perfect acidity and balance, with notes of ginger, dried apricot and orange on the palate. To taste or keep for a while in the cellar.

Coppery color. Discreet nose. Nuances of dried grapes, apricot, pumpkin jam with orange zest. Round, juicy palate, with normal body, a smooth finish, with nuances of apricot and dried grapes. Was better in 2001.

(9-1998) Throughout [it's life] an elegance to temper its sweetness. Perhaps one should not be surprised that at 36 years of age its colour was a too deep ruddy-amber; nose singed, prune-like; raisiny, almost tart.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience 1962 Bordeaux horizontal. Moderate Clear lucid gold with green tints. The nose is very elegant and well defined, touches of wet wool, honey, wood resin and barley sugar (a la Barsac). I wish it had more vigour and complexity, for it is rather overwhelmed by the Coutet and the Suduiraut. The palate is far better than the nose with a lovely creamy, harmonious texture with perfect acidity and balance. Citrus peel, fresh ginger, dried apricot, ginger and orange sorbet with noticeable residual sugar on the finish. This is probably an underrated Yquem given market prices, but the modest nose means I must temper my appraisal. Drink now- Tasted March 2010.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is a highly renowned Bordeaux wine estate. The Château primarily produces a great sweet wine as well as a white wine called "Y".

Since 1593, Château d'Yquem has been perfecting and passing down its expertise. This is how it stands alone as a Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. The other classified Sauternes and Barsac occupy the ranks of Premier Cru Classé and Deuxième Cru Classé. Previously owned by the Lur Saluces family, Château d'Yquem has belonged to the LVMH group since 1997.

In pursuit of excellence, Yquem does not market its wine if the quality is not deemed sufficient. This is how great vintages have marked history, such as 1921, 1937, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1988, 1997, 2001, 2009.

The wines are characterized by their complexity due to a significant amount of residual sugars and aromas brought by Botrytis Cinerea. A relatively high acidity helps to balance the sweetness. Another characteristic for which Château d'Yquem is renowned is its longevity. In good years, a bottle will only present its exceptional qualities after one or two decades in a cellar, and with care, it will maintain them for a century or more, adding complexity.
