The year 1991 was marked by a major episode of frost during the month of April. Part of the Château d'Yquem vineyard will not be impacted by this bad weather. At the Château, we are talking about a qualitative vintage but with lower yields. Wirksamkeit, during the harvest three tries were necessary to select the best berries.

The Wine Palate : The 1991 d'Yquem has 98 grams per liter of residual sugar. Pale to medium gold-amber in color, it opens with notes of pipe tobacco, saffron, and beeswax candles, leading to nuances of burnt sugar and lemongrass. The palate is delicately styled with subtle savory flavors and well-knit acidity, finishing on a whispery candied peel note. Tasted at the château.

Sunny yellow color. Nose of medium intensity. Warm butter. Candied pineapple. Coconut. Fine and complex. Touch of ethyl acetate on swirling. Soft and smooth attack, immediately fresh developing on a fine mouthfeel followed by a pure and noble taste where butter, pineapple, acacia return. In this vein appear complex, savory toasted notes with little sweetness present. Beautiful finely bitter finish. Becoming increasingly refined.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1991 Chateau d’Yquem was actually not affected by the frosts like everywhere else in Bordeaux, damaging 30% of the vines, predicating a two-track ripening cycle. This was not too much of a problem to overcome since bunches are picked one by one. It has a lighter color than the 1995. The nose displays moderate intensity with light waxy scents that would benefit from more vigor. The palate is well-balanced but there is a distinct sense of the wine being a little one-dimensional and it is missing some tension, especially toward the finish. Although this is a commendable Sauternes, there is a bitterness and a slight rawness that cannot be ignored. Still, it deserves a light applause considering the growing season.

Paler than 1990. Pale gold. Smells of very ripe pears. relatively simple and unevolved. Clean quite tart palate. Noticveably lighter bodied than 1990 – not as pure and tingling either. 17 and developing but not a great Yquem.

Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the wine history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir and microclimate that favor the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unparalleled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the great classified growths.

The identity of Château d'Yquem is based on extreme rigor at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical rigor of the château.

In great years, Château d'Yquem gives birth to vintages that have become emblematic, such as Château d'Yquem 1908, Château d'Yquem 1921, Château d'Yquem 1945, Château d'Yquem 1949, Château d'Yquem 1967, Château d'Yquem 2009, illustrating an exceptional aging capacity, which can extend over several decades, or even beyond.
