Wine Spectator May - 1999
Wine Spectator
A big, brutish wine with lots of everything. Rich aromas of cooked strawberries, earth and tobacco. Full-bodied and chewy, providing masses of tannins, yet it's smooth with ripe fruit and lots of character on the finish. Give it time.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Brane-Cantenac vertical at the château, the 1989 Brane-Cantenac has for many years been one of my favorite vintages in recent years. "We began the picking for one day and then stopped for two weeks in 1989," proprietor Henri Lurton told me. "The tannins were just not there." That decision to wait paid off. Noticeably deeper in color, more youthful than the 1990, it has a really quite enthralling, beautifully defined bouquet with ample red berries, cold tea, sous-bois, tobacco and mint - perhaps more energy here than the next decade combined! The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, a fine seam of acidity, grainy in texture but complex with thyme and wild fennel on the finish. This is probably at its peak now, but it has the substance to last another 15-20 years. This is the Brane-Cantenac to go for - a great wine.

A classy, beautiful Margaux that defies time with its freshness and still vibrant character. An elegant brane cantenac with intensity and finesse. This is a terrific wine at its peak with flavors that are mature and generous.

The wine is light in color. Aromatics of truffle, earth, cassis, spice, and cedar are a pleasure to sniff. Medium bodied and elegantly textured, this fully mature wine ends in a short, cherry and plum note

Château Brane Cantenac
Château Brane Cantenac

Château Brane-Cantenac is one of the great names of the Margaux appellation, classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the official 1855 classification. Located on the gravelly plateau of Cantenac, in the heart of the Médoc, this wine embodies the elegance, aromatic precision and tannic finesse characteristic of the great wines of Margaux.

The history of the estate dates back to the 18th century, but its modern identity was established in the early 19th century when Baron Jacques-Maxime de Brane acquired the property and gave it his name. Nicknamed at the time the "Napoleon of the vines," he helped elevate the cru among the references of the Médoc. For several generations, the Lurton family has managed the estate, pursuing a constant quest for precision and parcel expression.

The vineyard rests on hillsides of deep gravel mixed with sand and clay, a terroir particularly favorable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the majority grape variety in the blend. This composition gives the wines of Château Brane-Cantenac a straight structure, refined aromatic intensity and a remarkable aging potential.

Vintages such as Château Brane-Cantenac 1989, Château Brane-Cantenac 2000, Château Brane-Cantenac 2005, Château Brane-Cantenac 2009, Château Brane-Cantenac 2016 or Château Brane-Cantenac 2020 illustrate the qualitative consistency of the cru and its essential status among the collectible wines of Margaux.
