While not as legendary as Pavie’s 2003, 2001, 2000, 1999, or 1998, the 2002 is one of the top wines of the vintage. Its deep plumrubypurple color is followed by aromas of fruitcake, cranberries, cherry liqueur, crushed rocks, and subtle oak. Savory, full-bodied, remarkably concentrated, layered, and forward for a Pavie, it should be accessible in 3-4 years, and will evolve effortlessly for two decades.

Dark red. Good intensity. Beautiful. Clean. Medium intensity. Smoky. Toasted. Very new oak and very fruity. Too similar, which simplifies it. The entry on the palate is caressing, a bit liquid and the wine develops tense and quite rich but oaky after the middle. Beautiful juicy, oaky but flavorful length with a praline taste. It's a bit heady and warm.

Château Pavie
Château Pavie

Château Pavie is one of the greatest growths in the Saint-Émilion appellation, elevated to the top of the appellation's classification among the Premier Grands Crus Classés A. Spanning 37 contiguous hectares southeast of the village, it occupies an entire slope — an asteriated limestone plateau, a clay-limestone hillside, and a sandy-clay foothill — where Merlot predominates, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Taken over by the Perse family in 1998, the estate produces a deep, powerful wine built for long aging.

Its vintages span two eras: the great classics from before the takeover, such as the 1990, sit alongside the highlights of the Perse era — the 2000 vintage, the 2009 wine and the 2020 — while the second wine, Arômes de Pavie, offers an initial introduction to the house style.
