Six bottles opened for a dinner, one of which was corked. Beautiful nose of undergrowth and truffle. Tender and caressing palate, slender, very flavorful and marked by a tannic finish of cabernet sauvignon type. I expected it to be more velvety.

A prodigious, multilayered, medium-bodied effort with exceptional concentration, a fabulous texture, and a 50-second finish, this brilliant achievement is one of the vintage’s monumental wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+. P. S. Yields were a mere 28 hectoliters per hectare, which no doubt explains the wine’s stunning concentration. One of the superstars of the vintage, Pape Clement’s 2001 provides further evidence that this property, ambitiously managed with great dynamism by visionary Bernard Magrez, is pushing quality to the maximum and is obviously attempting to go head to head with its most famous rivals, Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion (both located a few miles from Pape Clement).

Château Pape Clement

Château Pape Clément is one of the major historic estates of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its history begins at the end of the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, future Pope Clement V, bequeathed his vineyard to the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. This direct link to the papacy gives the estate a unique heritage depth, making Château Pape Clément one of the oldest Bordeaux estates still in operation.

Classified as Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the official 1953 classification (revised in 1959), Château Pape Clément has established itself as an essential reference among the great wines of Pessac-Léognan, both in red and white. The vineyard, located at the gates of Bordeaux, sits on deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand, favoring a refined and complex expression of Bordeaux grape varieties.

The grape varieties are primarily based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, while the whites rely on Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Pape Clément's wines are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, silky texture and balance between power and elegance.

Recognized for their great aging potential, the estate's wines traverse decades with ease. Emblematic vintages such as Pape Clément 2005, Pape Clément 2001, Pape Clément 1998, Pape Clément 2000, Pape Clément blanc 2012, Pape Clément 2010 or Pape Clément 2003 illustrate the consistent quality and the unique position of Château Pape Clément among Bordeaux's great collectible wines.
