Jancis Robinson November - 2021

Deep garnet with a ruby rim. Very glamorous concentration of fruit counterbalanced by appetising freshness. Tannins completely resolved. Served blind, I took it for a Pomerol (I think Michel Rolland would have been the consultant winemaker). Luscious. A very flattering success!

An amazing nose of sweet tobacco, orange peel, cigar box and exotic fruit. Lots of tar too. Full-bodied, with exotic and spicy flavors that are slightly decadent and funky, but wild and wonderful, from leather to dried fruits. Just a baby, too. Give this more age.

Sweet, deep and seriously complex nose with nuances of violets, roses and undergrowth. Quite tough and chewy with searing tannin levels and notable acidity, but the fruit is there. Serious and extracted, outstanding potential.

Jean-Marc Quarin October - 2018

Dark, intense and evolved color. Moderately aromatic nose, with ripe fruit, a touch of overripeness and tar. Full on the attack, very fruity in the middle, mellow and dense, the wine accelerates in the finish, a touch firm, but sappy and long.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
The first vintage of Pape Clement with the stamp of Bernard Magrez is probably drinking at close to its peak today, with a tobacco, cherry, earth, smoke and truffle nose. The wine starts soft on the palate, but there is a dusty, rough note in the finish that is a little harsh. Still, the spicy, dark fruits and cocoa in the end are quite nice. There is probably no real hurry to drink this wine, but I am not sure it needs more age.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Showing signs of maturity on the rim, the ’98 Pape-Clement is evolving gracefully with a delectable tertiary bouquet: touches of damp earth, wild woodland, a hint of mushroom and chestnut tinged blackberry. Very fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied, quite sweet on the entry, more advanced than I was anticipating but very well balanced with fine tannins: dusty black fruits, liquorice, freshly rolled tobacco, a hint of allspice with a slightly rustic, but utterly pleasurable finish. This may not be a long-term Pape-Clement, but it compensates in its generosity.

Château Pape Clement

Château Pape Clément is one of the major historic estates of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, on the Left Bank of Bordeaux. Its history begins at the end of the 13th century, when Bertrand de Goth, future Pope Clement V, bequeathed his vineyard to the Archdiocese of Bordeaux. This direct link to the papacy gives the estate a unique heritage depth, making Château Pape Clément one of the oldest Bordeaux estates still in operation.

Classified as Grand Cru Classé de Graves in the official 1953 classification (revised in 1959), Château Pape Clément has established itself as an essential reference among the great wines of Pessac-Léognan, both in red and white. The vineyard, located at the gates of Bordeaux, sits on deep gravel soils mixed with clay and sand, favoring a refined and complex expression of Bordeaux grape varieties.

The grape varieties are primarily based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for the reds, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, while the whites rely on Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Château Pape Clément's wines are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, silky texture and balance between power and elegance.

Recognized for their great aging potential, the estate's wines traverse decades with ease. Emblematic vintages such as Pape Clément 2005, Pape Clément 2001, Pape Clément 1998, Pape Clément 2000, Pape Clément blanc 2012, Pape Clément 2010 or Pape Clément 2003 illustrate the consistent quality and the unique position of Château Pape Clément among Bordeaux's great collectible wines.
