This great terroir a few miles from Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion has produced one of the superstars of the vintage. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, Pape Clement’s 2005 has an opaque purple color and smoky barbecue and chocolaty notes intermixed with cassis and blackberries. There is also some underlying minerality in this full-bodied, super-concentrated wine, which has wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannins. This majestic, multidimensional wines is one of the great, great wines of the vintage. It should drink well for at least another 25 years.

What most people miss with Pape Clement, is that the wine is so concentrated, intense and a bit oaky in its youth, it needs cellaring time to really reveal its all. Still youthful here, another 5-7 years are needed before everything really starts coming together. Still, it is impossible not to see and enjoy the intensity, purity, depth of flavor, length and richness. The tannins are ripe, the texture is akin to velvet and the smoky, dark berries in the finish resonate for ages. Opened in the name of science, I'm waiting another 5 years before popping another bottle.

Very solid on the palate, elegant and mineral, core of firm tannins, fine nougat in the aftertaste, very well integrated, leaves a very good impression, promising aging potential, Vin de Garde.

Much more cassis and clear, plump, ripe berry fruit, with a touch of chocolate and more of that smoky, mineral and lightly spicy refinement. On the palate it is beautifully cool and composed, with searing acidity cutting through big, smooth tannins that give plenty of roughening grip. The structure is excellent, the fruit all there, and this shows huge promise.

Château Pape Clément is one of the jewels in the wide range of vineyards owned by Bernard Magrez around the world. Based in Bordeaux, this great owner has made quality his battle horse, his asset to face ever-increasing competition in the wine sector. Hence the care given to Château Pape Clément and to this terroir whose exceptional virtues have made Pessac's reputation for more than 7 centuries. At Pape Clément, pruning and leaf removal are of rare demanding standards, as is hand destemming. The vinification and aging methods carried out at Pape Clément follow very strict rules. Everything is done at Château Pape Clément so that nature can freely express its best.
