The 1996 is a much less saturated, but still deep colour, and has an immediately more open nose with more pencil-shavings and sweet black fruit, and just a little glimpse of game. The palate is more approachable too, with a slightly more open-knit texture and good fruit, though still very young and constrained by firm tannins and a lovely acid balance. This wine could be drunk now with roast beef or other robust foods, but really it needs time.

Dark, evolved color. Fruity nose, smelling of wet leather. Smooth, flavorful, aromatic and very fruity palate with fine, almost melted tannins. Very good length. The wine is very good, with a "slightly cold" character.

I love the fabulous, smoky, earthy, tar, cassis, cigar box and blackberry nose. Medium/full bodied, with a strict, firm personality to the tannins, which is you prefer very old school Bordeaux, you will probably enjoy that part of the wine more than I did. There is ample, earthy, spice filled, dark red fruits in the finish.

Château Haut Bailly
Château Haut Bailly

Château Haut-Bailly is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces classified growths from Graves in the Pessac Léognan AOC.

Haut Bailly is one of the rare Graves estates that produces only red wine.

In 1998, the Sanders family sold the vineyard to American banker Bob Wilmers, but Véronique Sanders continues to manage it. Gentle, almost discreet tannins, a delicate balance, "without anything too much" as Jean Sanders likes to say, define the incomparable Haut Bailly style. Nothing ostentatious in this wine that embodies Bordeaux finesse.
