Very tightly wound upon opening with a very earthy nose! After 2 hours in the decanter, bouquet of cedar, graphite, mint and vanilla inidicating lovely secondary characteristics. More fruit on the body than expected, it still has lively cassis, dark fruits and plum. Lovely balance with fine tannin and acidity. A typical finish of cedar and perhaps mint. Drink now to 8+ years.

Dark, intense, beautiful color, slightly evolved. Beautiful intense and fruity nose, creamy, appealing, slightly animal. Lovely smooth entry on the palate; the wine develops with a beautiful texture. Normal body. Flavorful in the middle, it extends in the finish and ends long on very fruity tannins with a taste of Médoc (ink, smoke, blackcurrant) without a hint of dryness. It's very good.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Firm, old-school, classic-styled Pauillac with loads of cedar, tobacco leaf, herbs, mint, cigar box and red currants. There is a rustic edge to the tannins in the chewy, spicy, currant finish. Drink from 2022-2028.

Mid to pale crimson with a little age at the rim. Dried herbs and grasses on the nose. Then sweetness. Then some quite brutal tannins. This needs quite a time.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 1996 Château Pontet-Canet was tasted from three different bottles. Two of them didn't pass muster and seemed a little bretty on the nose. A third was much better with mulberry, blackberry and cedar on the nose that still lacks the panache of more recent vintages. I noticed how meaty it became in the glass, slightly ferrous. The palate is medium-bodied and at 20 years fully mature. Cedar and dried herbs dominate the opening but unlike the 1982 Pontet-Canet there is decent substance here and a slightly medicinal finish.

Château Pontet Canet
Château Pontet Canet

Château Pontet Canet is a Bordeaux wine estate. The 80-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Pauillac appellation, not far from Château Mouton Rothschild. Château Pontet Canet is classified as a Fifth Growth in the 1855 classification.

The wines of Pontet-Canet have always been part of the Médoc legend. Deep ruby, purple, sometimes black, Pontet-Canet wine develops a characteristic nose where black fruits, especially blackcurrant, licorice, prune, notes of figs, cedar and sometimes cocoa blend together. On tasting, the wine combines power and elegance, density and amplitude. With a muscular character, it imposes a serene idea of classicism with this tannic structure that reveals a long and peaceful aging potential. The men of Pontet-Canet continuously pursue the work undertaken more than three centuries ago, bringing, in each era, the most advanced techniques with an eternal concern to improve the quality of the wine while respecting and expressing the purest expression of the terroir.

The wine of Pontet-Canet, as well as the second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet-Canet, are exclusively sold by the wine merchants of Bordeaux.
