Ruby. Dark fruits, ripe notes, cassis, some red berries, blueberries, fruit driven. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, quite lively and delicate, refreshing, blueberries again, some mulberries and red fruits, elegant, long.

Jane Anson - Inside Bordeaux
A stubborn vintage that remains bedded down, but shows beautifully as it opens. Caramel and smoked cedar aromatics, with a darker register overall than the 2001 – cassis, bilberry, black pepper, all densely structured. It’s an excellent wine, but less signature Gruaud Larose/St Julien than some of the others in the lineup, more strict, reflecting a vintage where it was a little tougher to reach full ripeness. Give this a long carafe to let the tannins soften, and the beauty will appear, with a juicy mint leaf finish, and gentle smoky notes that curl up out of the glass.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
A sweet, fruity, medium-bodied, surprisingly forward effort, the deep plum/purple-colored 2002 Gruaud Larose exhibits ripe aromas revealing herbaceous as well as spice notes. There is some potentially worrisome astringent tannin in the finish, but the wine’s depth augers well for this being ultimately resolved and integrated. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018.

Aromas of sweet plums and tobacco follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. A bit austere but well made.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Medium bodied, with an herbal quality to the tobacco and blackberry fruit in the nose, the wine has a light rustic, sandy quality to the tannins in the crisp, red plum and earthy finish.

Very little on the nose: wood and cedar notes. The palate has harsh tannins with a very green stalky mid-palate. A dry black dusty finish, this is surprisingly below-par for Gruaud Larose.

Brick hue. Earthy and slightly stewed on the nose. Soft attack but the fruit is absent, a green acidity omnipresent. Rather hard and coarse. Drying finish.

Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the major historic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified Second Growth in the 1855 classification. Founded in the 18th century, the château quickly established itself as a Médoc reference, driven by an ambitious quality vision and a reputation that extended far beyond the borders of Bordeaux.

Established on deep gravel terroirs resting on clay-limestone subsoils, the vineyard benefits from an ideal environment for the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This combination gives Gruaud Larose wines a pronounced structure, marked aromatic depth and remarkable aging capacity.

The château is also distinguished by its philosophy summarized in the estate's historic motto: "The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings." For several decades, significant investments have been made in both vineyard and cellar, with particular attention paid to sustainability, biodiversity and precision vinification.

Iconic vintages such as Château Gruaud Larose 1928, Château Gruaud Larose 1945, Château Gruaud Larose 1982, Château Gruaud Larose 1986, Château Gruaud Larose 1990, Château Gruaud Larose 1991, Château Gruaud Larose 2000, Château Gruaud Larose 2005, Château Gruaud Larose 2009 perfectly illustrate the estate's style: powerful, refined wines, both full-bodied and elegant, now highly sought after in the collectible wine market.
