(6-2009) A massive wine that is clearly of first-growth quality in this vintage, the 1982 Gruaud Larose remains a youngster. A broodingly dense, thick, unctuously textured, inky/plum/garnet/purple color offers up scents of beef blood, steak tartare, cassis, herbs, tobacco, and underbrush. One of the most concentrated wines of the vintage (as well as one of the most concentrated Bordeaux’s I have ever tasted), it is a huge, full-bodied, weighty, rich wine whose tannins are getting silkier and silkier. It appears set for another 30-40 years of life. This behemoth is a singularly profound example of Gruaud Larose that continues to justify its legendary status.

(11-1998) One of the best wines ever made at this estate. Dense ruby color with a slight amber edge. Intense grape, berry and raspberry aromas. Full-bodied, with loads of velvety tannins and a long, ripe fruit and mineral aftertaste.

(6-2012) Cool and very fresh with a seam of graphite. Drier than the Grand Puy Lacoste 1982 served blind alongside. More intense but with more obvious acidity. It may be drying out but I have given it the benefit of the doubt.

(3-2016) This is everything that one would expect from a sweet, ripe mature Bordeaux vintage like 1982. Attractive perfume of leather, savory spices and dried violets with silky tanins. This medium bodied beauty is wonderfully drinkable now but the finish is modest rather than long. Best to drink now.

Gruaud Larose

The Chateau Gruaud-Larose is a Bordeaux wine located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle. AOC Saint-Julien, it is ranked second growth in the Grand Cru classification of 1855

(>> see article "Grands Crus Classés from Bordeaux, Official Classification of 1855").

Château Gruaud-Larose's vineyard is composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec. The wine stays for 16 to 18 months in oak barrels in new mediums at 35%. Some great vintages have remained exceptional in Gruaud-Larose, as in all of Bordeaux, such as 196119821986 or 1989. This important area with extremely rare homogeneity is implanted on 80 hectares of single piece of deep gravel rumps . It produces the largest and most robust Saint-Julien, a wine of great class and very long guard, raised until 1991 under the direction of Georges Pauli, who has exalted his characteristic style under several successive owners.
