Jean-Marc Quarin May - 1998
Jean-Marc Quarin
Dark red. Good intensity. Slight evolution. Clean? Old wood. Similar. Massive. Tannic and without the richness one might expect from a Saint-Julien.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
This massive, backward wine appears to resist aging. Still bitterly tannic, impressively-colored (dark garnet with no amber), and monstrous on the palate, this wine will either turn out like the outstanding 1928 and begin to reveal some charm and character around age 40, or it will dry out, much like the 1948. It needs another 5-10 years of cellaring. The excruciatingly painful level of tannin makes this wine an enigma. It is likely to be appreciated only by the most patient Bordeaux enthusiasts. I would not be surprised to see some wine writer touting its greatness around 2025, long after most of it had been consumed and found to be pleasureless.

Fading ruby with an aged rim. Lowkey nose and a bit too much like hard work. Very chewy and fairly light. Of another era. Drying on the finish. On the way down; drying out. £204.40 Caves de Pyrène

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Rustic in style and still tannic, the wine feels hard on the palate. With it's old school style and tobacco, earth, herb and cassis aromas, it might be fun for lovers of this style to drink. But I found little pleasure in drinking it.

Château Gruaud Larose

Château Gruaud Larose is one of the major historic estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified Second Growth in the 1855 classification. Founded in the 18th century, the château quickly established itself as a Médoc reference, driven by an ambitious quality vision and a reputation that extended far beyond the borders of Bordeaux.

Established on deep gravel terroirs resting on clay-limestone subsoils, the vineyard benefits from an ideal environment for the expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the dominant grape in the blend, complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This combination gives Gruaud Larose wines a pronounced structure, marked aromatic depth and remarkable aging capacity.

The château is also distinguished by its philosophy summarized in the estate's historic motto: "The King of Wines, the Wine of Kings." For several decades, significant investments have been made in both vineyard and cellar, with particular attention paid to sustainability, biodiversity and precision vinification.

Iconic vintages such as Château Gruaud Larose 1928, Château Gruaud Larose 1945, Château Gruaud Larose 1982, Château Gruaud Larose 1986, Château Gruaud Larose 1990, Château Gruaud Larose 1991, Château Gruaud Larose 2000, Château Gruaud Larose 2005, Château Gruaud Larose 2009 perfectly illustrate the estate's style: powerful, refined wines, both full-bodied and elegant, now highly sought after in the collectible wine market.
