A wine of extraordinary intensity and accessibility, the 1995 Cos d'Estournel is a sexier, more hedonistic offering than the muscular, backward 1996. Opulent, with forward aromatics (gobs of black fruits intermixed with toasty pain grille scents and a boatload of spice), this terrific Cos possesses remarkable intensity, full body, and layers of jammy fruit nicely framed by the wine's new oak. Because of low acidity and sweet tannin, the 1995 will be difficult to resist young, although it will age for 2-3 decades.

DOCTORWINE : It is amazing how the color remains intact even 20 years after it was made. Cos d’Estournel’s is one of the longest living wines in the world and I have had the fortune of having sampled some that were over a 100 years old and were still good. The aromas are profound and stratified and the note that stands out the most is that of pipe tobacco, which is the wine’s trademark. This is followed by notes of leather, hawthorn and berries. The mouthfeel is taut, fresh and the tannins are gushing.

Château Cos D'Estournel

Château Cos d'Estournel is one of the most iconic estates of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Classified as Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it owes its singular identity to its location on the Cos hillside and to the bold vision of its founder, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, a prominent figure of the 19th century nicknamed the "Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe".

From its beginnings, Cos d'Estournel established itself through an international ambition rare for the time, exporting its wines as far as Asia. This openness to the world is still reflected today in the unique architecture of the château, inspired by the Far East, a true visual signature in the Médoc. The vineyard rests on terroir of deep gravel mixed with clay, benefiting from the proximity of the Gironde estuary, giving the wines structure, depth and complexity.
