Jean-Marc Quarin April - 1999
Jean-Marc Quarin
On one of the three occasions when I tasted the Clos Fourtet 1996 in bottle, I rated it exceptional (90 points). The color is a saturated dark ruby. The nose offers sweet black raspberries and blackberries blended with aromas of toasted oak and flowers. It is fleshy, surprisingly expansive and forward-looking for a 1996, with low acidity and a long, layered and fruity finish. The tannin is ripe, so the fruit asserts itself and the wine is seductive and charming. This wine possesses the weight, richness and extract necessary to last 15 to 20 years, but it should be drunk early. I would not be surprised if readers find my score too conservative based on the quality of this wine. Expected maturity: 2003-2018.

Blackberry, dark chocolate and cigar box aromas follow through to a full-bodied palate, with chewy tannins and a medium finish. A lot of wood showing on the finish. But a very good wine.

I would not be surprised for readers to feel my score is too conservative based on how well this wine is showing.
