I love old Bordeaux, because no two bottles are ever the same. Thankfully this one was in a perfect spot. Probably at peak, but definitely felt like it had a while left. Funky, tertiary nose on opening. Decanted for an hour then took to a restaurant, and by the time we drank it towards the end of the meal, the funkiness had gone and it was a perfect example of an aged St. Julien. Still lots of tertiary notes, but loads of fruit there also.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Close to fully mature here, the wine is medium-bodied, earthy, round, soft and fleshy with a generous dose of sweet, ripe, black fruits, smoke, licorice, dark cherry and earth. Not as concentrated as some of the top wines from 1996, but the tannins are ripe, the wine is round, plush and sensuous with a beautiful, ripe, sweet, red pit fruit finish.

Dark color, intense and slightly evolved. Moderately aromatic nose distinguished by fruitiness bordering on overripe and oak still present. Mellow on the attack, smooth in the mid-palate, with less structure than Las Cases, the wine drops off on the finish with medium length.

Deep crimson. Not much nose; still quite youthful. Big mouthful of round, supple fruit and some gunpowder undertow. Attractive balance and a quite meaty still. I don’t think this would disappoint any claret lover.

Château Leoville Poyferre
Château Leoville Poyferre

Château Léoville Poyferré is a Bordeaux wine estate. Under the Saint Julien appellation, it is classified as a second growth in the official 1855 Médoc wine classification.

During the reign of Louis XIII, in 1638, Master Jean de Moytié, an ennobled Bordeaux bourgeois and counselor to the Parliament of Bordeaux, owned a vineyard planted on a gravel hill near the River. This gave the place the name "Mont-Moytié", following the custom of the time to designate a place by the name of its owner. The Mont-Moytié cru was part of these first historical growths of the Médoc, all born before the Fronde (1648-1653). The Médoc was then giving birth to its first parish growths.

This beautiful vineyard, originating from the former Léoville estate in northern Saint-Julien, is one of the best terroirs of the appellation and certainly the richest of the second growths. The 80 hectares planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc produce a deep and rich wine.

Château Léoville Poyferré produces elegant, very fine, balanced, and complex wines with intense color and velvety texture, which have excellent aging potential.
