Do not let its tawny port appearance put you off. The bouquet is so ridiculously delineated and pure that it will make any other Sauternes within its ambit look ordinary. The aromas race from the glass: Seville orange marmalade, quince, wilted rose petals and an old antique bureau. The palate is perfection. The balance is extraordinary, the acidity effortlessly slicing through the candied orange peel and quince notes, a subtle saline tang delivered on the shimmering, crystalline finish. Returning to the bottle two hours later it has lost absolutely none of its energy. I might one day drink a Sauternes equal to the 1945 Yquem, but I will never drink a Sauternes that is better.

Falstaff
Strong amber with reddish shimmer, exotic honey nose, passion fruit, raisins and figs. On the palate caramel and dried figs, great, sublime aromatic depth, in the aftertaste a characteristic spicy botrytis fire, fine sweetness, silky finish, even after hours the finest honey scents in the empty glass. In color, this almost 70 year old wine sported copper with orange hues. With time, about 30 minutes, candied orange, caramel, burnt sugar, grilled pineapple, honey and nut aromas rose from the glass to create the perfume. Soft, lush and sweet, the wine leaves a rich trail of caramel corn, brioche, roasted orange, spice, butterscotch, grilled pineapple and vanilla sensations on your palate. It does not have the same level of concentration, complexity or exotic texture found in the legendary 1937, but it's close. This was my first time with this vintage. I hope it’s not going to be my last.

Very dark brownish amber. Rich and layered. Incredibly sweet, then bitter and citrus peel. Oxford marmalade? Apricot compote. Very dense. Clean and very long. Some light bitterness. Crème pâtissière. Got better and better in the glass.

Château d'Yquem is an absolute reference for great sweet wines and occupies a unique place in the wine history of Bordeaux. Located in the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate benefits from exceptional terroir and microclimate that favor the development of botrytis cinerea. During the official classification of 1855, Château d'Yquem obtained an unparalleled status by being consecrated Premier Cru Supérieur, a unique distinction among the great classified growths.

The identity of Château d'Yquem is based on extreme rigor at every stage of production: very low yields, harvesting by successive selections and rigorous selection of grapes. Long owned by the Lur Saluces family, the estate has belonged since 1997 to the LVMH group, which has chosen to preserve the technical independence and historical rigor of the château.
