The FAQ

What is complantation, the signature of Domaine Marcel Deiss?

Complantation is a traditional method revived by Jean-Michel Deiss. It consists of planting different Alsace grape varieties (Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, etc.) on the same plot. Each vine expresses itself according to its environment, and the resulting natural blend reveals the identity of the terroir rather than that of the grape variety.

What is the philosophy of Domaine Marcel Deiss?

The estate defends a philosophy focused on the primacy of terroir: the wine must express the place from which it comes rather than the grape variety from which it is made. This approach, supported by biodynamic viticulture and respectful soil work, allows the production of authentic, profound and complex wines that faithfully reflect the richness of the great Alsace terroirs.

What are the main Grands Crus of Domaine Marcel Deiss?

The estate cultivates several prestigious Alsace Grands Crus, including Altenberg de Bergheim, Schoenenbourg and Mambourg. These exceptional terroirs, composed of marly-limestone and sandstone soils, give birth to wines of great complexity, at once rich, mineral and perfectly balanced.

Domaine Marcel Deiss - The unique expression of Alsatian terroir

Domaine Marcel Deiss, located in Bergheim on the Alsace Wine Route, is today one of the most emblematic estates in the region. Classified among the Grands Crus of Alsace, it is distinguished by a unique approach to viticulture, centered on the enhancement of terroir. Far from being limited to the expression of a single grape variety, the house favors complantation and the diversity of plots in order to reveal all the complexity and typicity of each great Alsatian terroir.

The history of Domaine Marcel Deiss:

The Deiss family has been established in Bergheim since 1744. It was in 1947 that Marcel Deiss truly founded the estate after his return from World War II. From the 1980s onwards, his son Jean-Michel took over the operation and gradually initiated the conversion to organic and then biodynamic viticulture, with an official commitment to environmentally friendly practices as early as 1998. Today, his son Mathieu continues this trajectory guided by innovation and loyalty to the soil.

A singular viticultural philosophy

The estate is distinguished by its practice of complantation: several traditional Alsatian grape varieties are cultivated, harvested and vinified together on the same plot. This method allows to value first the place then the variety. The wines are produced with respect for living things: worked soils, plots cultivated in biodynamics, manual harvesting and slow fermentation. This structural rigor aims to bring out the most authentic expression of the terroir.

What are the characteristics of the wines of Domaine Marcel Deiss:

The wines signed Marcel Deiss are distinguished by their aromatic intensity, their silky texture and their balance between richness and freshness. Rather than highlighting a single grape variety, each cuvée expresses the minerality, the structure and the tension specific to its terroir.

The whites, which are in the majority, reveal great aromatic complexity: notes of ripe fruits, white flowers, sweet spices and flint depending on the soil of origin. Their length on the palate and their aging potential make them wines sought after by enthusiasts and collectors. The cuvées from Grands Crus, such as Altenberg de Bergheim, Schoenenbourg or Mambourg, reach heights of precision and depth.

The best vintages of Domaine Marcel Deiss:

Among the remarkable cuvées, we find:

  • Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru 2018: rated 18/20 by La Revue du Vin de France "Majestic Altenberg, caressing and upright, whose mellow and tender palate is brimming with savory and endless flavors."
  • Mambourg Grand Cru 2020: rated 95+/100 by Robert Parker "The Grand Cru Mambourg 2020 offers a nose of beautiful limpid and pure beauty but also intensely aromatic with aromas of kumquat and bitter orange."
