The 1991 Chateauneuf du Pape is more modestly-constructed than the outstanding 1990. The vintage was extremely difficult and this wine reflects the fact that not even a magician such as Guigal can make the proverbial pig's ear into a silk purse. Nevertheless, this is a solid Chateauneuf du Pape, with peppery, herbal, cherry fruit, some spice, and medium body, but a more compact, angular personality than the sumptuous 1990.

The Domaine E. Guigal stands as one of the absolute references of the Rhône Valley, both northern and southern. Founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Étienne Guigal, this family estate built its reputation on a demanding interpretation of terroirs and a constant pursuit of excellence. Today led by Marcel and Philippe Guigal, the domaine embodies a heritage-driven vision of fine wine, recognized on an international scale.

Historically based in Ampuis, Maison Guigal vinifies and ages in its cellars all the great northern Rhône appellations, among which Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. The same site also oversees the aging of iconic southern appellations such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, ensuring perfect mastery of the aging process and a coherent stylistic identity.

Closely associated with Côte-Rôtie, where it produces some of the most iconic cuvées of the Rhône, Domaine E. Guigal distinguishes itself with wines of remarkable depth and longevity. Dominant Syrah, a touch of Viognier on the Côte Blonde, patient aging: the style combines depth and freshness and rewards those who wait. The estate's great vintages range from the 1988 wine to the 1999 vintage, including the Ex-Voto from 2003, through to the more recent 2016, 2017 wine and 2018.
