Falstaff January - 2010
Falstaff
Strong ruby garnet, deep core, delicate violet reflections, subtle rim. Restrained on the nose, with air dark berries, underlaid with notes of damp undergrowth, dried porcini mushrooms, a touch of soy, with air delicate hints of dried fruit. On the palate dark berry compote, mineral texture, ripe, present tannins, a good food companion, shows good length, some nougat and plums on the finish, a wine with potential, still rather unapproachable. Will develop into a classic Ducru.

Fully into its prime-time drinking window, the nose, with its tobacco, cedar chest, cigar box, herb, forest leaf, and currant-filled perfume is a treat. Full-bodied, with ample concentration, length, freshness, and a wealth of chewy currants on the palate, this is a treat to drink at this stage. Not much decanting is needed, just pop, pour and enjoy the ride. Drink from 2022-2036.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1996 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot harvested from the 23rd of September to the 8th of October. Medium brick colored, it delivers mature notes of sweaty leather, camphor, tobacco and dried mulberries with a core of kirsch, charcuterie and dried cranberries plus a waft of sandalwood. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic freshness with a light chewiness to the texture and loads of herbs spark red and black fruits, finishing earthy.

Dark color, medium intensity and evolved. Rather unpleasant wet wool nose. Lovely entry on the palate, quite full, followed by a well-present mid-palate, but harsh finish, with green, aggressive notes.

Deep blackish garnet. Quite a powerful nose – lots of beef and muscle but not yet settled down. Tannins and acidity in evidence. Not a charmer – bit of a boxer but it is certainly concentrated and many other tasters were impressed by it. Clean and fresh but it definitely needs food! Drying finish. Not my style of claret at the moment but it will still be going strong in 10 years’ time. Slightly old-fashioned?

Château Ducru Beaucaillou
Château Ducru Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is one of the most illustrious estates of the Saint-Julien appellation, classified Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855. Located on deep gravel overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to the "beautiful pebbles," those characteristic quartz stones that ensure perfect drainage and ideal thermal retention, essential conditions for the maturity of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Founded in the 18th century and acquired by the Borie family in 1941, the estate is now managed by Bruno-Eugène Borie, who has profoundly strengthened the stylistic identity of the cru. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou has established itself as one of the most refined signatures of Saint-Julien, sought after for the precision of its aging, the exceptional quality of its fruit, and the nobility of its tannins.

The vineyard sits on Günzian gravel ridges among the finest in the Médoc. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot, the blend produces wines of great depth, combining density, freshness, and structure. The aging in French oak barrels, perfectly mastered, supports the structure without masking the expression of the terroir.

Vintages such as Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1982, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1995, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 1996, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2005, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2003 or Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2014 illustrate the consistency and exceptional aging potential of the estate, now considered a major reference among the great collectible wines of Bordeaux.
