Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
An underrated wine, the 1989 Calon-Ségur is drinking beautifully, unfurling to reveal aromas of cherries and dark berries mingled with notions of cigar box, loamy soil, black truffles and grilled meats. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and muscular, with a generous core of fruit, ripe tannins, low acidity and a long, lusty finish, it is another 1989 that's going from strength to strength as its structure softens with age.

Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
Firm, with a stern edge, a bit of green in the tannins, and a crunchy red berry, peppery, herbal, cedar, and cigar-packed palate, this is a wine from a throwback from a different era that some tasters will like more than I did. Drink from 2022-2032.

Mid-crimson with a slightly orange rim. The nose is much fresher than that of the 1990 and there is more acidity on the palate. For the moment this is less fun to drink than the exotic 1990 but it will certainly last longer and there is more to it. The tannins are still a little sandy but this wine seems much less obviously ripe than the 1990.

Château Calon Segur
Château Calon Segur

Château Calon-Ségur is a 94-hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third growth (1855 Official Médoc Wine Classification) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the grand vin is often recognizable by its label. The estate's grape varieties consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines averaging 40 years of age. Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of the Saint-Estèphe appellation.

The estate also produces a second wine Marquis de Calon Segur and a cru bourgeois Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003 vintage, 2005, 2009 wines, 2010 and 2014 are excellent.
