(10-2016) Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine & Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. Just over a decade ago when I last tasted the 1989 Calon Segur, I was enraptured by this wine. However, over subsequent years time has caught up with it and it is now beginning to show signs of wear and tear. It is what you might call "old school": sandalwood, warm bricks and bay leaf scents with just a touch of star anise. It feels just a little fatigued. The palate is medium-bodied, rustic and broad-shouldered, but with a sweet core of degraded fruit, vestiges from that hot summer. The finish foursquare and a little austere, suggesting that it might dry out within 5-8 years. There is still some pleasure to be gained from this Saint Estèphe.

(12-2001) Mid-crimson with a slightly orange rim. The nose is much fresher than that of the 1990 and there is more acidity on the palate. For the moment this is less fun to drink than the exotic 1990 but it will certainly last longer and there is more to it. The tannins are still a little sandy but this wine seems much less obviously ripe than the 1990.

Calon Segur
The Chateau Calon-Segur is a 94 hectare vineyard located in Saint-Estephe. It is ranked third cru classé in the rankings of 1855. The vineyard grows on gravelly and hilly terrain. The vines consist of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc with vines average age of 40 years. The wine is made very traditionally, aging for on average 24 months in oak barrels, partly new (30-50% depending on the year). The wine of Calon-Segur is generally regarded as one of the most powerful and full-bodied wines of Saint-Estephe. The estate also produces a second wine called Calon Segur Marquess and the cru bourgeois Capbern Gasqueton.
