Château Calon-Ségur is a 94 hectare wine estate located in Saint-Estèphe on the left bank of the Gironde. Third classified grand cru (official classification of Medoc wines in 1855) of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, this great wine is often recognizable by its label. The Château Calon-Ségur vineyard grows on gravelly and hilly terrain. The vineyard of the estate is made up of 65% cabernet-sauvignon, 20% merlot, 15% cabernet franc with vines of 40 years of average age.
Calon-Ségur wine is generally considered to be one of the most powerful and full-bodied Saint-Estèphe wines in the appellation. The estate also produces a second wine Marquis de Calon Segur and a cru bourgeois, Capbern Gasqueton. The best vintages of Château Calon-Ségur are 1982, 1988, the 1995 vintage as well as the 1996 wines and the 2000 vintage. Finally, the 2003, 2005 vintages, 2009, 2010 and 2014 wines are excellent.

(07-2002) Very deep crimson with some evolution. Gentle, big, bloody start and then quite rustic fruit. Chewy finish.
(07-2014) The Château Calon-Ségur 1982 continues to be a delightful fully mature Saint Estephe. It has a similar bouquet to the bottle tasted in Hong Kong in 2012, with Chinese tea and leather, roasted herbs and here, just a suggestion of cocoa. The palate is medium-bodied but fuller than the Batailley 1982, tasted alongside. It exerts a gentle grip and like last time, perhaps there is a hint of brettanomyces towards the finish. But otherwise, this continues to drink well, albeit in an old-fashioned way. If you can abide a bit of rusticity in your 1982 Claret, then this Calon-Ségur will fit the bill.
Acker Merrall and Condit (05-2012) The 1982 Calon Segur was also quite popular amongst the crowd due to its ready, willing and able nature. Its nose was open and brothy with yeast, game and nut aromas. The palate was tasty and gamy, a bit more jammy than the others with lots of cherry flavors. The minerals and slate came out, and the finish strengthened.
