Our opinion on the 2013 vintage: an advantageous year for Burgundy wines and sweet wines. 

In Bordeaux, unpredictable weather challenged producers. Fortunately, thanks to the châteaux's expertise, the 2013 vintage produced some interesting wines. Burgundy was also hit by unstable weather conditions. This resulted in a small and late harvest, but low yields allowed the berries to be more concentrated. The Rhône Valley generally produced better wines than in 2012. Of almost similar quality, the 2013 red wines are more balanced than the previous vintage.

Our advice on buying a 2013 wine.

In Bordeaux, Saint Estèphe was one of the few appellations to benefit from a considerably drier growing season. As a result, Saint Estèphe is of superior quality, and its wines rank among the most successful Bordeaux wines of 2003. 

It’s an excellent vintage for Sauternes, with wines of very high quality. Château Guiraud’s 2013 grand vin is a fine example.

In Burgundy, the wines are fresh and intensely aromatic. The whites have lively acidity but lack a little depth. The reds, meanwhile, are lighter and more elegant.

We recommend the Chambolle-Musigny and Morey Saint Denis appellations, which produced very good Burgundy wines, as did Domaine de la Romanée Conti.

In the Rhône, look to the wines of the north. The Rhône Valley excelled in the Hermitage, Côte Rôtie and Cornas appellations. The reds are fresh and pure, while the whites are livelier and more aromatic.

The best wines of this vintage are Château Cos d’Estournel 2013, Château Montrose 2013 and Château Haut Brion 2013.

In Sauternes, Château d’Yquem 2013, Château Climens 2013, Château Suduiraut 2013 and Château Guiraud 2013.

   

What are the best Burgundy wines of 2013?

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2013 from the Echezeaux appellation, Domaine J.F. Mugnier Les Fuées 2013, Leroy Domaine d’Auvenay 2013 from the Mazis-Chambertin appellation, and Chevalier-Montrachet are excellent.

  

What are the best Rhône wines of 2013?

Chapoutier L’Ermite 2013, GUIGAL Ex Voto 2013 and Domaine Yves et Mathilde Gangloff La Sereine Noire 2013 are outstanding wines from this vintage.
