Expert's opinions

Information on the vintage 1985 red Bordeaux: [This vintage] seems to encapsulate all that is good about Bordeaux, the wine, not the city: its weight, its balance, its character. It is certainly my favourite vintage of this splendid decade typifying claret at its best.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
I have tasted the 1985 du Tertre nine times, five times from cask and four times from the bottle. While I have never seen a wine behave so differently, the two most recent tastings have revealed positive results. The last two examples (both tasted in France) exhibited a nice deep ruby/purple color with no signs of age and a forward, earthy (truffles?), curranty bouquet that was enticing. In the mouth, the wine possessed plenty of fat, ripe, supple blackberry and curranty flavors, with just enough soft tannins and acidity to give the wine grip and focus. This is a luscious, very forward style of du Tertre.

Château Du Tertre

Château du Tertre is an 80-hectare wine estate located in Arsac Margaux in Gironde. In the Médoc AOC, it is classified as a fifth growth in the official 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. The vineyard of Château du Tertre consists of grape varieties comprising 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

The vines are 40 years old on average. In 1997, Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma purchased the Du Tertre estate where he made significant investments to restructure the entire property. With its exceptional terroir and rare homogeneity, Du Tertre's vineyard is now recognized as one of the highest quality potentials in the Margaux appellation. While modernizing the Du Tertre property, Eric Albada Jelgersma and his team have maintained traditional methods, thus combining innovation with tradition.
