An incredible tasting experience, it is hard to know where to start. Do you focus on the elegance, refinement, and silky tannins? Or, is it the purity in the fruit, with its breathtaking array of sweet cherries and kirsch? Perhaps the perfume, with its floral, red berry, herb, earth or cornucopia of spices? Maybe, it is the finish that does not quit? As I said, I have no idea where to start. But with wines like this, it really doesn't matter, does it?

 A beautiful Rayas with chiseled features as well as depth and generosity. The 1989 is not as sweet or opulent as the 1990, but it is equally seductive, complex and intense with a persistent finish. Beautifully mature now and at its peak.

The 1989 Chateau Rayas is an absolute peach. Deep in colour, it has an intense, flamboyant yet beautifully controlled bouquet that oozes sensuality from every pore: blackcurrant pastilles, dark plum, hint of Alpine forest and bacon fat. It is extraordinarily pure and yet it transports you straight to the region, something that magical wines have a propensity to do. The palate is structured and focused, a Chateauneuf-du-Pape with palpable presence and class, building gently in the mouth towards a youthful, strident finish that suggests it will last another couple of decades... easily. This is a wine to lose yourself in.

The Rayas Estate is located in the southern Rhône Valley, at the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Founded by Albert Reynaud and passed down through four generations, this discreet family estate spans only 10 hectares and has established itself as a major reference for great Rhône wines.

For a long time led by Emmanuel Reynaud, who recently passed away, the estate continues to uphold his legacy and singular vision of wine. The Reynaud family is also behind Domaine des Tours and Château de Fonsalette. At Rayas, Grenache is the sole grape variety for red wines, while white wines are crafted from Grenache and Clairette, in a style characterized by finesse, purity and terroir expression.

Among the emblematic vintages of Rayas are notably the Rayas 1990, Rayas 2006, Rayas 2007, Rayas 2009 and Rayas 1989, essential references for Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
