Of the three 86s, clearly the best today! Today's sample has an absolutely stunning aromatic profile, closer to Latour than to Cos, but even more seductive, with stunningly pure, fine notes of spices, tobacco, fresh berries, a minimal hint of noble leather and cedarwood; the tannins are firm and full, but rounder than those of the two competitors, the whole signals not only power, but also perfect harmony. I know many magnificent Pichon-Lalande, but none of this particular class. Is now at its peak and fully deserves the 20 points.

Superbly structured, with breathtaking aromas of plums, chocolate and berries that follow through on the palate. Full-bodied, with full tannins and a long, alluring finish.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience’s Pichon-Lalande vertical in London. The 1986 Pichon Lalande is still looking very youthful. The nose is incredibly backward and surly with smoke, cedar, cigar box, cooked meats with good definition. You could describe it as being rather joyless but it will surely mellow out with further bottling ageing. A touch of liquorice develops with time. The palate is full-bodied, firm tannins, backward, broody, good acidity, crisp black fruits, iodine, and a touch of liquorices, taut with good length. After 22-years this has not entertained the notion of entering it drinking plateau. Hopefully it will mellow out soon – a broad-shouldered, burly Pichon Lalande. Drink 2012-2030. Tasted December 2008.

I tasted it in Hong Kong alongside the 1995 and 1982. Great, very refined nose dominated by cedar. Very Cabernet Sauvignon. Slender, straight palate, very caressing and fragrant, with fine grain, melting body, and a perfumed, irresistible finish. At its peak.

Tobacco, cassis, cigar box, truffle, 5 Spice, olives and earthy scents introduce this brawny, old school, masculine styled wine. Robust and powerful, this brawny Pauillac will age for decades, but it's never go to become charming or offer the elegance found in other 80's vintages of Pichon Lalande like 82, 83, 85 or 89.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, located in Pauillac in the heart of Médoc, is one of the most emblematic Second Grand Cru Classé of the 1855 classification. Founded in the 17th century and lastingly marked by the figure of Virginie de Pichon Longueville, Comtesse de Lalande, the estate stands today as an essential reference among the great wines of Bordeaux.

Located on deep gravel ridges resting on a clay-marl base, in close proximity to the Gironde estuary, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir and a microclimate particularly favorable to the maturity of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine combines power, precision and elegance, in a style recognized for its finesse and aging capacity.

Property of the Rouzaud family since 2007, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande continues a demanding quality policy, committed to an environmental approach certified HVE and in conversion to organic farming since 2021. Parcel-based vinifications and the use of a gravity-flow vat room allow to preserve the pure expression of the Pauillac terroir.

Vintages such as Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1982, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1986, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1994, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1996, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2000, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2009, illustrate the qualitative consistency and remarkable aging potential of this great Pauillac wine, particularly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of rare wines.
