Jeff Leve - The Wine Cellar Insider
At probably full-maturity, this is a gorgeous Pauillac. rich, supple, and concentrated, you find a wealth of dark currants, tobacco leaf, cigar box, spice, blackberry, peppery herbs, and leather on the nose. The palate is even better with its silky textures, length, and soft, luscious, earthy, tobacco-tinted fruits that linger. Popped and poured, it showed great from the get-go.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
The 1996 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is really beginning to drink with style, wafting from the glass with an inviting nose of blackberries, cassis, cherries, rich soil tones, Cuban cigar and subtle hints of mint and bergamot. Medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with an expansive, sumptuous core of fruit that's underpinned by ripe acids and ripe, powdery virile tannins, it concludes with a long, penetrating and sapid finish. This unusually Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated vintage was tightly wound for its first two decades, but as time passes it's the château signature that's dominating the cépagement. It's one of the wines of the vintage in 1996.

Falstaff November - 2014

Dark ruby ??garnet, violet reflections, delicate lightening at the edges. Fine blend of dark forest berries, cassis, a hint of cedar wood, lots of nougat. Juicy, opulent, reminiscent of top Cabernets from Napa Valley, very freshly structured, characterized by an above-average Cabernet Sauvignon content, aromatic, almost baroque style, mineral in the finish, a storable, long-lasting wine that will bring joy for a long time to come.

This bottle of ‘96 Pichon Comtesse didn’t quite reach the sublime heights of the ‘82 but was supern nonetheless. Classic plum fruit, cassis, green pepper, lead pencil notes on the finish. At peak for my taste preferences easy 95/100.

Dark and evolved color. Intense, aromatic nose with a dominance of ripe fruit. However, a less mature touch of evolution appears in the glass, evoking a bygone past. Palate with a longiform body, a patinated texture with here and there a return of nuances of red pepper and spices. It's very good with the rack of pork as it compensates for a little lack of maturity. Average length. To drink without delay.

Magnum. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot.  Really intriguing wine that's already quite evolved on the nose. Really deliciously perfectly formed at this stage. Juicy and ripe but with admirable freshness. Most impressive. Polished tannins and at a perfect stage for current drinking.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande

Harmony and the variety of grapes of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is unique in the Pauillac appellation. It is undoubtedly the proportion of grapes that gives a guarantee of longevity and an exceptionally elegant personality exempt of harshness. The 45% Cabernet Sauvignon determines the structure and gives it its longevity. The recent tasting of older vintages such as 1875, 1893, 1900 have shown, by their astonishing youth, the possibility of aging the wines of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. 35% Merlot: a surprising percentage, unusual in an appellation that emphasizes Cabernet Sauvignon. "My uncle Louis loved this grape," says May Eliane de Lencquesaing, "it brings the color, roundness and suppleness, hallmarks of the wines of this area". The 12% Cabernet Franc gives a balanced wine with a fruity bouquet, firm and clear in his youth, which integrates very well during aging.  The 8% Petit Verdot provides freshness and aromatic complexity and spiciness. In the years with bright sunlight as in 1982, 1986, 1989 and 1990, when the maturity of the grapes was excellent, its contribution is remarkable. The Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande remains faithful to the tradition of hand picking. Each year, more than 100 people - often the same families of Andalusia - pick grapes in the field, depending on the age and the maturity of the plots. Merlot, a precocious variety, starts the harvest, the Cabernet and Petit Verdot, late varieties, close the harvest. They sort rigourously in the vineyard and at the arrival on the receiving hopper.
