Despite being almost 20 years old, this wine is still young. The color is a deep red, almost black. The nose is not yet fully open but one can already sense its aromas of ripe fruit and precious wood. The palate is extremely straight. Perfect in balance and rigor. This wine is built to last for years.

This needs some patience, as at least 2-3 hours of air are needed to help it soften and fill out. Roses, tobacco, scorched earth, cassis, cranberry and peppery herbs open the nose. There is weight and depth, a touch of herbs and crisp, crunchy red berries on the palate. The finish comes with a hint of green olives and a bit of dryness. Classic in style, this is firm, stern version of Pichon, but it manages to avoid some of severity found in most wines from the vintage. It is ready to go, although it could improve with more time.

Mature and expressive with cassis, spices and tobacco notes. Not an intense vintage but one that has all of its components in balance with supple texture and fine tannins.

Robert PARKER - The Wine Advocate
Tasted at the Chapon Fin restaurant in Bordeaux. I have not tasted this for three of four years. Tasted against the 1996, I don’t think it has the breeding or ambition as that vintage, but it is certainly coming into its own. The Cabernet Franc is less pronounced on this bottle, but there remains a savour, dried blood tincture right in the background. The palate is medium-bodied and just a little herbaceous, yet there is undoubtedly sufficient fruit here to render this a very enjoyable Pauillac, armed with that seductive tobacco-tinged finish. Superb – but will last 15-20 years.

Not decanted. Dark color, of medium and evolved intensity. Intense nose, vanilla-scented, fruity and smoky. Full, juicy, flavorsome palate, finishing slightly tannic and lively too. Body, but not the subtlety of the previous one.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse De Lalande

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Bordeaux wine estate that produces its grand crus in the Pauillac appellation. It is a second growth classified in the official 1855 classification. Recognizable by its white label with golden writing, the Château is also known for its high quality wine and expertise. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande also produces a second wine: La Réserve de la Comtesse.

The 45% Cabernet Sauvignon defines the structure, the framework of the wine and gives it its longevity. Recent tastings of old vintages such as 1875, 1893, 1900 have shown, through their surprising youth, the aging potential of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande wines. 35% Merlot: a surprising percentage, unusual in an appellation that favors Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 12% Cabernet Franc produces a balanced wine with a fruity, firm and clean bouquet in its youth, which blends very well in the blend during aging. The 8% Petit Verdot brings freshness and great aromatic and spicy complexity to the blend. Each year, more than 100 people - often the same families from Andalusia - harvest the estate's grapes according to the degree of ripeness and age of the plots: Merlot, an early-ripening variety, starts the harvest, while Cabernet and Petit Verdot, late-ripening varieties, close it.
